Izyum brings together Mount Kremenets and a multifaceted history of architecture and remembrance. The mountain is notable for its geological features, dendrological park and memorial sites. In the city, churches and the local history museum add further points of interest. You can plan your trip around both nature and history.

Natural features and memorial sites on Kremenets

Kremenets is 218 metres high and consists of limestone strata with layers of flint. It also contains numerous fossilised animal remains and plant impressions. In the southern part of the mountain, a 4.5-hectare dendrological park is home to more than 200 species of trees and shrubs, including many exotic species. The geology and diversity of woody plants give the mountain two distinct facets: traces of the Earth's history sit alongside a rich variety of plants.

Kremenets is also associated with a collection of stone sculptures from the 10th to 13th-century Scythian-Kipchak period. In 2023, the city administration reported that the sculptures had been taken for restoration. Their historical context adds a cultural perspective to the mountain's nature and geology.

Kremenets is also shaped by its memorial heritage. The monuments commemorating fallen liberation soldiers were brought together as a memorial complex and included in Ukraine's State Register of Immovable Monuments. At the summit, the Square of Remembrance is also home to “Ataka,” an architectural and sculptural composition and a field monument. For travellers who want to explore landscape and history together, these diverse themes form a distinctive focal point in Izyum.

Churches and museum history in Izyum

The Cathedral of the Assumption of the Virgin was built and consecrated in 1826. The Holy Cross Church, also known as St Nicholas Church, was first built between 1704 and 1709 as a small wooden church, funded by its congregation. The two buildings offer a comparison across time, from an early wooden church to a 19th-century cathedral.

The M. V. Sibilyov Local History Museum was founded in 1920 by local historian and archaeologist Mykola Vikentiyovych Sibilyov and named after him. Its collection includes a 1707 altar Gospel with a silver, gold-plated cover, as well as military decorations of the Izyum Cossack Regiment. A liturgical book and military decorations represent different aspects of the history associated with the place.
