History

Historically, Balerna was associated with the Mendrisio bailiwick. Until 1573, Balerna had a court in which it was represented by two parish priests.

Balerna is a municipality in the Balerna district and in the Mendrisio district in Ticino, Switzerland.

In 1798, Balerna voted to remain part of Switzerland rather than join the Cisalpine Republic.

Under the Aarau decree of 30 May 1798, Balerna and Mendrisio were incorporated into the Helvetic Republic.
