Geographical Location

Bedretto is a municipality in the Swiss canton of Ticino and belongs to the Airolo circle and the Leventina district.

Bedretto borders Realp and Obergoms in neighboring Swiss cantons, as well as Airolo, Cevio, Lavizzara and Formazza in the Italian region of Piedmont; Formazza can be reached via the Passo San Giacomo.

Nature and Landscape

During the Ice Age, the Gries Glacier flowed from Valais over the 2,485-meter-high Cornopass into the upper Bedretto Valley.

The water from the 2,386-meter-high Gries reservoir is carried through the Bedretto Valley via penstocks to Lake Maggiore and is part of the Maggia power plant system.
