Chapfensee Nature Reserve is associated with moorlands where rare raised bog plants grow. The Giessen streams are a defining landscape feature of the intensively farmed Rheinau and support a diverse range of plant and animal life. The Giessen streams and the adjacent alluvial forest provide habitats for numerous rare and endangered breeding bird species.

Mels is located in the Seez Valley in the Sarganserland constituency of the canton of St. Gallen. The municipality lies between Gonzen, the Rhine and the Seez; Pizol is also located within the municipality.
Culture
Mels has a long musical tradition. The Harmonie Mels men's choir was founded in 1850 and is described as the oldest association in the municipality. Since 1985, the Altes Kino Mels cultural association has staged cabaret performances throughout the Sarganserland region.
Protected wet meadows, raised and fen bogs, as well as dry habitats of regional and national importance, are located in Melser Hinterberg.
