The Stein district is an administrative district in the Swiss canton of Schaffhausen. Since 1999, the canton has no longer had district administration; however, the designation of the district has been retained.

Culture and History

Stein am Rhein lies on the Rhine at the western end of Lake Constance and has a medieval old town with half-timbered houses and frescoes. The compact late-medieval old town preserves remnants of the town wall as well as the Lower Gate, Upper Gate, Hexenturm and Kretzenturm towers. The former Benedictine monastery of St. George preserves many historic sections, including former monastery rooms, an abbot's residence and a hall with wall paintings.

The Lindwurm Museum in Stein am Rhein presents domestic and agricultural life around 1850 in a former town house.
