Nature
Melchtal refers both to the valley formed by the Grosse Melchaa in the canton of Obwalden in Switzerland and to the settlement in this valley.
The settlement lies at an altitude of 890 metres and belongs almost entirely to the political municipality of Kerns. The Melchaa forms the border with Sachseln; the few houses west of the river belong to Flüeli-Ranft.
The Melchtal runs from south to north and is closed off at its northern end by a gorge before opening out into the Sarneraa Valley. Near Flüeli-Ranft, this gorge is also called the Ranft Gorge.
Höch Dossen, Rämisgütsch, Wandelen and Ofen are located in the immediate surroundings of Melchtal.
Visitors travel from Kerns through the valley to Stöckalp. From there, a cable car and, in summer, a mountain road lead to Melchsee-Frutt.
Culture
The former Melchtal Benedictine convent, founded in 1866, is located in Melchtal. The convent is therefore one of the cultural attractions for visitors with an interest in history.
The name Melchtal is associated with the alleged origins of Arnold von Melchtal, who appears as one of the three founding figures in the Swiss founding myth of the Rütli Oath.
Land and Everyday Life
Livestock farming, alpine farming and tourism are described as the predominant activities in Melchtal.
