Montfaucon is recorded as the first settlement in Franches-Montagnes to be mentioned, in 1139; Spiegelberg Castle was founded in the late 13th century.

The name of the region is associated with a document from 1384 that granted settlers exceptional freedoms.

Saignelégier is designated as the main locality of Franches-Montagnes.
