Culture and History

The old church or chapel of Morissen was first mentioned in 1345. The present-day Church of Sogn Giachen e Sogn Philipp was built in 1867/68. The church preserves a wooden high altar dating from around 1720, which was taken from the old church.

The stone mill at Il Mulin is also part of the local history. It dates from the 18th century and was replaced at its current location in 1945. It was renovated in 2005 and is now operating again.

Landscape

The Sogn Carli Chapel stands in a forest clearing above Morissen on the eastern slope of Piz Mundaun, next to the old path to Obersaxen. It was probably built in the second half of the 17th century. The chapel’s nave features wall paintings depicting the Last Judgment and Saint Michael as the weigher of souls, as well as a depiction of the Virgin Mary with an unidentified alliance coat of arms. The clearing by the chapel offers a view of the Ruinaulta.

Hiking

The moderately difficult Morissen circular hike is 6.3 kilometers long and includes 247 meters of elevation gain and descent. It begins in Morissen, leads through the alpine pasture landscape towards Giatries, through the Sogn Carli forest, and back to Morissen via Linaus. The circular hike can be extended with a detour to Sogn Carli Chapel.

The “Places of Magic – Morissen” hike follows the upper edge of the village through meadows towards Giatries and Sogn Carli.

Cycling Routes

The “Haute Route Mundaun” gravel-bike day route starts in Ilanz, is 66 kilometers long, and includes 1,950 meters of elevation gain. On a descent, the Haute Route Mundaun passes through Morissen and continues to Vella. The Via Mundaun 2 route also passes through Morissen to Vella.

Local Cuisine

At Il Mulin in Morissen, guests can enjoy local specialties; the kitchen uses many regionally produced products from near-natural production. Using wheat flour grown in Morissen by Ursin Riedi, Il Mulin prepares, among other things, spätzli, bizochels, bread, and capuns.
