Culture and History

Degen is first mentioned in the Reichsguturbar, which is dated to around the year 840.

The chapel of Sogn Bistgaun contains an altar by the artist Ivo Strigel dating from 1506. Around 1740, this altar was redesigned as a Baroque altar. Nossadunna is the parish church of the Fraissen parish, while Sogn Vetger is considered its filial church. The parish church of Nossadunna in Degen dates back to the Carolingian land register. It stands on an ancient place of worship with an almost dried-up spring and is dedicated to the Virgin Mary.

The Openair Lumnezia has been held in Degen since 2006. Over one summer weekend, the event attracts around 18,000 visitors to Lumnezia.

Paths and Landscape

The Lumnezia Cultural Trail is an easy route measuring 7.5 kilometres. It runs via Vella, Davos Munts, Vignogn, Degen and Pleif back to Vella. Information boards cover history, culture, geology, fauna and flora; more than 30 boundary stones commemorate important events in the history of the valley. Three information boards also explain the plant and animal life of the fens.

The “Places of Magic – Vattiz/Degen” route leads to the small chapel of Sogn Vetger on a hill on the edge of Degen. The chapel stands on a glacial moraine ridge. Turatscha is a viewpoint reached via the southern edge of Degen. At Turatscha, a grass-covered ruin marks the site of the former ancestral castle of the episcopal ministeriales of Blumenthal, who controlled and secured the routes. Crap dils Morts lies on the descent from Turatscha towards the Glenner.

Crap Malèe is a large limestone erratic boulder known as the Devil’s Stone, distinguished by its black colouring and apple-shaped form. For the hike between Vattiz and Degen, take PostBus route 90.441 from Ilanz to Vrin as far as Vattiz. For the return journey, PostBus route 90.444 runs from Degen to Vella, followed by route 90.441.

Winter

The Degen cross-country ski trail is a 4-kilometre route starting and ending in Degen. It is groomed for classic cross-country skiing and skating and is suitable for both beginners and experienced cross-country skiers. The route alternates between longer flat sections and smaller descents and climbs.

The Degen night trail is an approximately 1-kilometre route groomed for classic cross-country skiing and skating. From mid-December to the beginning of March, it is lit on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday evenings from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. The entrance to the Degen night trail is located at the upper edge of the village of Degen.

Lake and Culinary Delights

The Davos Munts bathing lake is located in the immediate vicinity of Degen, above Vattiz in Val Lumnezia, at an altitude of 1,300 metres above sea level, and is a natural swimming lake. The lake offers a paddling pool, a jetty, several barbecue areas, a beach volleyball court and a slackline.

The Caduff adventure farm includes a small farm restaurant and a shop offering mainly products made on the farm itself. The range is supplemented by products from selected other businesses. In summer, the Caduff adventure farm opens its show garden to interested visitors. NUA serves a seven-course surprise menu inspired by what grows, ripens and gives off its aromas on the farm itself, as well as by the ideas of the kitchen team.
