Praden: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

Praden is a locality in the Grisons municipality of Chur, on the left side of the Schanfigg valley, about five kilometres as the crow flies southeast of Chur. As a settlement, Praden lies on the slope about 400 metres above the course of the Plessur River.

Nature

In the immediate vicinity of Praden are Gürgaletsch, a mountain, and the peaks Fürhörnli, Tschingla and Malakoff.

Further afield lie the deeply incised Plessur and the northern slope of Gürgaletsch; a mountain pass leads to the Churwalden valley as a pack trail.

Culture and History

A Reformed church and the old schoolhouse stand next to each other in Praden.

The settlement was mentioned in German as “Pradener” in 1488 and is known in Romansh, both historically and to this day, as “Prada”.

Around 1300, German-speaking Walser people from Langwies settled permanently in a forest clearing that had previously been cleared by Romansh speakers.

The Chur Animal and Leisure Park, a zoo, is located near Praden.
