Geographical Location

Surlej is a locality in the Upper Engadin municipality of Silvaplana in the canton of Graubünden.

Nature

Surlej lies south of the Inn between Lej da Champfèr and Lej da Silvaplauna, at the foot of Piz Surlej and Corvatsch.

Above Surlej, a dam was built in 1873 that diverted the stream to Lej da Silvaplauna; this created a waterfall described as an impressive summer backdrop.

Culture and History

A St. Nicholas Chapel stood in Surlej from 1757 until it was demolished in 1955. For travellers interested in culture, this former chapel is a specific detail of the locality’s history.

The people who live permanently in Surlej are – like the population of the municipality – bilingual in German and Romansh.

Historically, Surlej was associated with muleteers travelling towards Italy via the Julier Pass.

Orientation
