Geographical setting

Tamins is a municipality in the Swiss canton of Graubünden and in the Imboden Region, approximately 10 km west of Chur.

The municipality extends beyond the Kunkel Pass into the Tamina Valley and reaches into high alpine terrain. Ringelspitz rises to over 3,200 metres, and the SAC Ringelspitz Hut contributes to the municipality's alpine character.

In Reichenau, a locality within the municipality, the Vorderrhein and Hinterrhein meet at the Schlossfelsen and form the Rhine.

History

At the foot of the Crestis hill plateau southwest of the village of Tamins lies an archaeological site. It yielded Late Neolithic finds from the 3rd millennium BC, including ceramics as well as artefacts made of stone and bone.

Transport

Reichenau-Tamins railway station is located within the municipal territory of neighbouring Domat/Ems. From Chur, the Rhaetian Railway lines branch off towards Thusis and Engadin, as well as towards Disentis/Mustér and Andermatt. After crossing the Vorderrhein, the latter line runs through the municipality of Tamins and reaches the level of the Wackenau ruins.

The Archaeological Service of Graubünden classifies this type of settlement among the canton's oldest archaeological sites.
