Culture and Townscape
The old Catholic parish church of St John the Baptist features wall paintings dating from the period after 1515 and a Late Gothic winged altar from 1504. High up on one of the characteristic Tumas of Domat/Ems stands the Church of Sogn Gion.
The Chapel of St Anthony is located 50 metres above the village on the Tuma Casté and was built in 1725. Domat/Ems originally developed as a linear village; the centre is characterised by a dense network of paths connecting squares with different characters.
The historical EMS-CHEMIE exhibition presents the company’s history with around 140 photographs, more than 300 historical documents, props and parts of installations, as well as more than 600 product and application examples across more than 1,400 m².
Experiences
Quadrel has a 700 m² bouldering area with a national competition wall, a large roof, various slabs, a spacious beginners’ area, a training area and a children’s playground. Its dedicated training area includes a campus board, fingerboards, a pull-up and dip bar, a pulley system, TRX, handstand supports, medicine balls, a barbell station, yoga mats and a system wall.
EMSORAMA at the Werkplatz Domat/Ems offers visitors of all ages more than 50 experiments at 17 stations across a 400 m² experimental area. A visit to EMSORAMA is possible for groups of 10 or more, must be booked in advance and is free of charge.
Nature and Trails
The Emser Tuma and Rhine Heights route is a moderately difficult 17.6 km hike with 302 metres of ascent and 302 metres of descent. It leads along the golf course and the edge of the forest to Plong Leula, where protected flora and a sessile oak are mentioned.
Chur city bus route 1 takes hikers from Chur railway station to the Post stop in Domat/Ems, the access point to the Emser Tuma and Rhine Heights route. After a detour around the Tuma Padrusa, the route ends at the Chur city bus stop by the post office in Domat/Ems.
The Via Francisca route from Chur to Bonaduz passes between the Tuma Tschelli and Tuma Casti hills near Domat/Ems and circles Tuma Casti to the north.
Golf
The Domat/Ems golf course is located in a Tuma landscape and has three 9-hole courses. The Golf Club Domat/Ems can be reached by car via the A13 and by public transport via Ems Werk railway station; from there, the golf club is just a few minutes’ walk away.
