Portein is a hamlet-like clustered village on the outer Heinzenberg, on the southeastern-facing western boundary of Domleschg. The village lies on the ridge between the Porteiner Tobel and Val da la Malanotg, at approximately 1,167 to 1,178 metres above sea level.

Portein has a Reformed church heritage associated with St Gallus. The former Church of St Gallus collapsed into the Porteiner Tobel in 1720 and was replaced by a new building in the village.

The easy Lescha–Plattis circular hike is 4.4 kilometres long and takes approximately 1:30 hours. It has 237 metres of ascent and 235 metres of descent and offers views of Domleschg and the Albula Valley.
In the Viamala region, a 42.7-kilometre mountain bike tour is listed with difficulty level S1 (difficult), a duration of 4:30 hours, and 1,535 metres of ascent and descent respectively.
