Culture and History

The parish church of All Saints stands on an elongated hill high above the Albula Valley and has a Gothic bell tower. Construction of the All Saints Church may have begun around 1470; its walls still enclose the Baroque church today. St. Luzius Chapel is a late Romanesque building and is once again used as a place of worship today.

The Schmitten Local Museum documents social change with the arrival of modernity and is located in Schmitten’s former schoolhouse. It provides insights into agricultural work, various crafts, mining, customs and ecclesiastical traditions, and conveys what life was like in a simple mountain village in the central Albula Valley. From the parish house built in 1707, follow the Stations of the Cross dating from 1761; its Passion paintings have been fully restored since 1985.

Nature and Activities

The labyrinth of the ore mines extends over three levels and is open to tourists. The former ore mines lie at an elevation of 2,546 metres on the southeastern flank of Bleiberg, also known as Blyberg or Schafläger, around five kilometres north of Schmitten. Guided tours of the ore mines are offered from July to October; they include a two-and-a-half-hour hike from Schmittner Alp.

A summer walk from Schmitten leads to the Landwasser Viaduct, which has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 7 July 2008. Summer activities include biking to Schmittner Alp as well as biking on the surrounding routes.

Geographical Location

Schmitten is easily accessible from Davos or Lenzerheide via a very well-developed road, including by public transport. The Viaduct Shuttle takes you to the new stop at the Landwasser Viaduct in Schmitten GR.
