Culture and History

The Mariaburg monastery complex stands on the site of Näfels Castle, which was destroyed by the people of Glarus in 1351. Before that, the castle was an important Habsburg administrative centre in the Glarus region.

Näfels lies on the left bank of the Linth.
The village is located in the border area of the Schwyz Alps, the Glarus Alps and the Eastern Swiss Pre-Alps at an elevation of 437 metres above sea level. The former highest point of the municipality was the Rautispitz at 2,283 metres.
Getting There
The castle site can be reached by leaving the A3 at the Niederurnen exit and following main road 17 up the Linth Valley. From Glarus, S-Bahn lines 6 or 25 reach Näfels-Mollis.
