Above Interlaken and Habkern lies Lombachalp, an 86 km² moorland landscape that is one of the largest and most impressive in Switzerland. The alp is home to extensive lowland moors as well as rare, protected raised bogs. Anyone wishing to rent a holiday apartment in Habkern is choosing this location as their accommodation base.
Nature
The rare raised bogs of Lombachalp are protected because they are particularly sensitive to trampling and are uncommon; they must not be entered at any time of year. The Lombachalp Explorer's Kit makes it possible to explore the Habkern-Sörenberg moorland landscape and the protected area around Lombachalp. From June to October, it can be borrowed free of charge from the Jägerstübli restaurant.
Culture
Habkern Church was built in 1666 by Abraham I Dünz on the hillside of the scattered settlement and has since been renovated several times. The coat-of-arms relief in the vestibule, the pulpit, the baptismal font and six heraldic panes date from the time of construction; most of them were created by Matthias Zwirn.
The Habkern Village Museum conveys the history of the village through traditional household objects, tools, musical instruments, and photographs and film footage. It is housed in a former classroom and covers the traditions, customs, crafts and distinctive geology of the Habkern Valley.
At Bernatone Alphornbau, visitors can book a guided tour of the workshop to learn more about the production of the traditional Swiss alphorn. The Bernatone Alphornbau Museum is usually open free of charge.
Activities
Habkern Swimming Pool is a small, family-friendly, solar-heated pool with a kiosk, children's paddling pool, playground, and sunbathing lawn with a picnic area. It is just a few minutes' walk from the Zäundli bus stop and is easily accessible by public transport.
Bus alpin route 31.107 connects Habkern Zäundli with Lombachalp-Roteschwand and operates partly as a demand-responsive bus. At Lombachalp near Lägerstutz, there is a prepared sledding slope. The Habkern ski area has a children's winter wonderland with a snow carousel, magic carpet and character trail. Hohgant Bike is a 41-kilometre cycling route starting and ending in Habkern.
Alpine and Regional Specialties
At Heubühlen Alp, visitors can watch the production of alpine cheese. Fresh alpine cheese is sold there on site, and a traditional Alpine herdsmen's breakfast with rösti, fried eggs and cheese is also offered.
