Sonvilier lies at an elevation of approximately 802 metres above sea level in the upper part of the Jura longitudinal valley Vallon de Saint-Imier. As the crow flies, Sonvilier is 12 kilometres northeast of La Chaux-de-Fonds.

The municipality, covering an area of 23.8 km², includes part of the Vallon de Saint-Imier basin drained by the Schüss. The municipal area extends south to the anticline of Mont d’Amin and north to the ridge of Montagne du Droit. The highest point is on Mont d’Amin at 1,269 metres; Montagne du Droit reaches 1,220 metres.

History

The ruins of Erguel Castle stand on a rocky promontory. The surviving round tower is described as the largest castle ruin in the Bernese Jura. From the 13th century onwards, the castle was the centre of a bailiwick of the Prince-Bishopric of Basel.

Erguel Castle lies above Sonvilier on a wooded, rocky ridge. Its keep is round and has a maximum external diameter of 7.50 metres; the walls are up to 2.50 metres thick.
