Uddevalla features a varied landscape of cliffs and an archipelago, as well as lakes and green forests. Between nature trails, historic sites, museums and local produce, the town and its surroundings offer numerous and diverse facets.

Nature and Trails

Strandpromenaden is a 9.3-kilometre path for pedestrians and cyclists through Uddevalla. It runs from Skalbankarna via the centre of Uddevalla to Lindesnäs and is divided into woodland, urban and beach sections. There are signposts and information boards along the route.

In the Herrestadsfjället area, the two nature reserves invite visitors to hike, collect mushrooms and berries, ski and go sport fishing, among other activities. The approximately 4.2-kilometre gravel circular route Vindsvalan has moderate uphill and downhill sections. For cyclists, Lelångenleden follows the embankment of the disused Lelångebanan railway line and passes through the beautiful Bjursjöområdet area in Uddevalla. In Uddevalla, Kuststigen also runs from Skalbankarna along the award-winning Strandpromenaden.

One possible combination is a trip on the m/s Sunningen from Södra Hamnen in the centre of Uddevalla to the steamboat landing stage near Ammenäs and a return hike along Kuststigen on the southern shore of Byfjorden.

History and Culture

The ruins of Ture Malmgrens borg preserve local history and offer beautiful views. They can be visited year-round; from the car park by the tennis courts on Dalstigen, it is approximately 400 metres to the circular trail. Gustafsberg is Sweden’s oldest seaside resort and spa, with origins dating back to the late 18th century. The site can be visited year-round and is suitable, among other things, for walks along the easily accessible Strandpromenaden.

Bohusläns museum features permanent exhibitions on the history of Bohuslän, as well as temporary exhibitions and contemporary art. The cultural programme includes lectures, music evenings, themed days and exhibitions. The exhibition “Uddevalla genom tiderna” presents more than 500 years of Uddevalla’s history. Another way to experience art is “Konst på stan”, a tour of several locations featuring public artworks in the municipality of Uddevalla.

Bokenäs gamla kyrka is one of the oldest surviving medieval churches in Bohuslän. The nave, chancel and apse date from the 12th century.

Special Places in the Natural Landscape

Bassholmen has hiking trails and barbecue areas in its nature reserve. The former shipyard buildings on Bassholmen house a boat museum displaying older types of boats. In summer, Bassholmen can be reached from Uddevalla by excursion boat.

Skalbankarna is home to fossil shells of mussels and snails that lived more than 10,000 years ago. Visitors can walk along the hiking trails and visit Skalbanksmuseet.

Activities and Local Products

At Emaus Lantgård, visitors can see various farm animals in the Emaus nature reserve. Emauspromenaden is approximately 600 metres long and is also suitable for wheelchairs, wheeled walkers and prams. Anyone who would like to try climbing with instruction can find an eleven-metre-high climbing wall at Rimnershallen, open to anyone wishing to climb under the guidance of Bohusläns klätterklubb.

Storms Botanik offers creative workshops and events. At UpplevelseLadan, visitors can rent kayaks.
