Uddebo: Textile History and Village Culture
Accommodation in Uddebo
In Uddebo, traces of the textile industry meet a varied cultural life and opportunities to spend time outdoors. The village can be discovered in different ways: by exploring its history, taking part in community activities, or following paths on foot or on the water.
Textile History and Uddebo’s Buildings
A notable moment in the village’s history came on Christmas Eve 1900: that was the day the first electric lights were switched on in Uddebo. The textile industry is also part of the village’s history. The Uddebo Trikåfabrik and a weaving mill known as “dukaväveriet” were established here. Around the turn of the century, the businesses are said to have employed about 100 people. This past provides a historical context for seeing Uddebo today.
Uddebo’s historically interesting built environment includes stately directors’ villas, workers’ housing, and detached homes. The Sjuhäradsrundan cycling route passes through Uddebo and this area. The route also passes Villa “Fritidsgården”, which now houses an exhibition about Uddebo’s history. The village’s history thus brings together different perspectives: working life, forms of housing, and the way the village’s development is remembered today.
Culture and Community Life
Several former textile industry buildings now provide space for creative activities, gatherings, celebrations, and working together. Culture is therefore connected not only to the past, but also to the use of old buildings for new activities. Världshuset is a cultural centre in Uddebo’s former schoolhouse; events focused on food, movement, and creative activities are held there.
Gula Huset also brings together a range of activities. These include a café, concerts, film screenings, and quiz nights, as well as markets, flea markets, a free shop, a woodworking workshop, canoe rental, and art projects. Individual dates and activities may change. If you are planning your visit around a particular event or activity, it is best to check in advance what is happening during your travel dates.
One special community tradition is the annual 24-day Advent calendar during the darkest time of the year. Villagers invite one another to enjoy surprises and meet up. Vegetables and flowers are also grown in Uddebo’s centre, in community-run fields and on a smallholding. From March to October, anyone interested can take part in the shared work; dates and participation requirements may change.
Hiking, Cycling, and Time by the Water
There are four marked hiking trails around Uddebo. The Sjuhäradsrundan passes through the village as a cycling route, making the historic built environment part of the ride. The villa exhibition about Uddebo’s history is also located along this route. If you would like to combine your stay with outdoor activities, there are various options to consider when planning your trip.
Canoeing is possible on the stretch of river near Uddebo; canoes can be rented at Gula Huset. Bybastun offers a different way to experience the water: it is a wood-fired sauna for about ten people, with a wooden jetty leading down to the Assman River. If you plan a visit, check in advance whether the sauna is available and under what conditions it can be used.
Bus 320 runs from Tranemo or Svenljunga. Since timetables can change, check the connection for your travel date. When choosing your holiday accommodation, consider what you would like your stay to focus on: Uddebo’s textile and architectural history, community culture, or time on hiking trails and by the water. If you are planning around a particular event or seasonal activity, take its dates and participation requirements into account.
