Holiday apartment in Töreboda on the Göta Canal – Nature, Culture and Trails

Töreboda lies between Lake Vänern and Lake Vättern; here, the Västra stambanan railway line crosses the Göta Canal.

Location and orientation

Töreboda railway station is located directly on the Göta Canal, and Töreboda can be reached by train via the Västra stambanan. In summer, the open tourist information office is located in the guest harbour in the same premises as Visthuset. Outside the summer season, information is available at the town hall and the library.

A special connection across the canal is the Lina ferry. It crosses the Göta Canal in Töreboda and connects the western and eastern halves of the town for pedestrians and cyclists. The crossing takes 20 to 25 seconds. The ferry service was established in 1919 by retired locomotive driver Oskar Lindhult.

Nature and trails

Five nature reserves extend through Töreboda Municipality. Borreboda dammar is home to a rich birdlife; around 40 bird species can be observed there in summer. The area also includes a nature trail, an information board, a bird book and a renovated birdwatching tower with a landing stage.

The trails also reveal different facets of the landscape. Hälsans stig in Töreboda is a 4.5-kilometre walking trail that runs mostly along the Göta Canal. Along the Göta Canal, there are a total of 87 kilometres of car-free paths suitable for cycling. A day-long cycling route connects Töreboda and Hajstorp over approximately 4.4 kilometres each way on the car-free towpath along the Göta Canal.

The Älgaråsleden is 40 kilometres long in total and has three shelters at the Trehörningen, Kroksjön and Edsån stations, as well as three named starting or ending points: Älgarås, Åsebol and Undenäs.

Water and leisure

In the section of the Göta Canal in Töreboda Municipality between Gastorps bro and Järnvägsbron in Töreboda, everyone may also fish from the shore. Swimming is permitted in the Göta Canal, but not within 50 metres of locks and bridges.

For another leisure option, Moskogens friluftsområde has a nine-hole disc golf course. Töreboda Golfklubb has an 18-hole parkland and woodland course. At the tenth hole, there are 100 metres of water between the tee and the green.

Culture and history

The Göta Canal has 58 locks and is used by thousands of boats every year. The Töreboda-Björkängs hembygdsmuseum is housed in a former trading warehouse dating from 1881. History is also present at Borreboda dammar: the clay pits date back to the area’s industrial history, and in 1908 the tile factory in Töreboda began producing bricks, roof tiles and drainage pipes there.

Älgarås Church is one of the few surviving medieval wooden churches in Sweden. Its medieval furnishings include a baptismal font, a Marian altar, a rood cross and a bell with a runic inscription dating from the 13th century.

In a former warehouse directly beside the locks at Hajstorp on the Göta Canal, Hantverk kring Kanalen displays textile, ceramic and silversmithing works. The venue is run by five women artisans.

Enjoyment by the canal

Hajstorp Slusscafé is located directly on the Göta Canal between Sjötorp and Tåtorp. Organic breakfasts, baked goods and savoury pies are served there in an authentic canal setting. The café also offers Fairtrade refreshments as well as products featuring cakes from a local bakery.
