Holiday apartment in Sunnersberg: church, pilgrimage routes and cycling tours

Sunnersbergs kyrka stands on Kålland, about nine kilometres northwest of Lidköping, high on a hill. With its tall, slender spire, it is visible from far away. Its history dates back to the late 12th century and is linked to remarkable details inside the church, in the cemetery and in the surroundings of Sunnersberg.

Culture and history

The oldest parts of Sunnersbergs kyrka date from the late 12th century. The church acquired its present appearance in 1869. Its furnishings include a 17th-century pulpit, which was financed and donated in the 1670s by Count Magnus Gabriel De la Gardie. A preserved double lily stone is kept in the porch. The altarpiece depicts the body of Christ, carried by angels, and is probably a work by Anthonis van Dyck, painted in the 1620s.

The cemetery also preserves traces of history: there are several older gravestones as well as a masonry storage shed from 1746. Another attraction in the area is Riddaregårdens väderkvarn. It was originally built in 1879 by mill builder Anders Bruto Göte for Janne Jansson at Holma farm in Sunnersberg parish. Along the road between Lidköping and Läckö Castle, the windmill is a highly visible landmark.
