Holiday apartment in Munkedal: Kynnefjäll, lakes and sea
Munkedal combines distinctive landscapes, waterways and sites of cultural and historical interest. Kynnefjäll is a plateau region crossed by parallel rift valleys with watercourses and elongated lakes.
Nature and water
In the Strömmarna Nature Reserve, you can hike among potholes formed by glaciers, through deciduous forests and along wooded steep slopes, or go canoeing. Among other species, osprey, peregrine falcons, beavers and lynx can be observed there. The Kviström Nature Reserve is an easily accessible hiking area with a well-developed network of trails. From there, the view extends across the Örekilsälven valley; there is also a waterfall about 15 metres high.
Kärnsjön lies in the Örekilsälven valley and is one of the largest and deepest lakes in Bohuslän. There are good opportunities for swimming, fishing and hiking around the lake. The Örekilsälven is Bohuslän’s second-largest watercourse and one of the best salmon-fishing rivers in southern Sweden. Salmon fishing is carried out in the Örekilsälven from April to September.
The Municipality of Munkedal has access to the sea via the Gullmarsfjord. Together with the Saltkällefjord and Färlevfjord, the fjord encloses Tungenäset.
Hiking, cycling and canoe routes
The Bohusleden passes through the Municipality of Munkedal in several stages and is suitable for both day hikes and hikes lasting several days. Several hiking trails lead over Kynnefjäll from Kasebo. The trails vary in length and difficulty, and some connect to the Bohusleden.
The municipality designates Kynnefjäll as an area for cycling. At Stale in Munkedal, there is a mountain-bike trail operated by Munkedals Skid- och Cykelklubb.
Canoes and kayaks can be rented from May to September at the Friluftsfrämjandet canoe centre on Lake Vassbotten near Kaserna. The Flottarleden starts at the canoe centre at Vassbotten and runs for more than 40 kilometres to Dalsland.
Culture and history
The Munkedals Hembygdsmuseum has existed since 1964 and has an extensive collection documenting life in the Munkedal region in earlier times. Gamla Bruket is a historic part of the paper mill site in Munkedal; there, the Munkedalsslöjd association offers, among other things, courses in handicrafts and bookbinding.
Thomas Thorild Square in Hällevadsholm was designed by the artist Lukas Arons. It commemorates Thomas Thorild’s ideas about the freedom of human beings to shape their own lives and destinies. The Stenehed burial ground comprises at least 40 prehistoric sites.
Churches in the wider region around Munkedal include Håby Kyrka, Valbo-Ryr, Mo and Mo kyrka, Bohuslän. The islands of Lilla Bornö, Furö, Kråkholmen and Kläsholmen are also located in the wider surrounding region.
Torreby Castle was built in 1887 as a red-brick summer palace in the Romantic Gothic Revival style, based on plans by the architect Adolf Emil Melander and designed after English models. Today, Torreby Castle serves as the restaurant and clubhouse of the Torreby Golf Club.
Munkedals Jernväg is a 5.6-kilometre narrow-gauge railway between Åtorp and the harbour of Munkedal, on which museum trains operate.
