Holiday apartment in Mölndal – Trails, Nature and Culture

When you explore Mölndal, trails through nature meet vibrant cultural history and family-oriented water activities. The municipality borders Gothenburg and is only a few minutes from the Liseberg amusement park. At the same time, the range extends from quiet moorlands and birdwatching sites to historic gardens, industrial heritage environments and well-connected walking paths.

Trails through Forest and Countryside

Bohusleden runs 26 kilometres through the entire municipality of Mölndal and then continues northwards. Two of Bohusleden’s 27 stages run through Mölndal Municipality. A shorter route is Hälsans stig, an approximately six-kilometre walking and fitness trail through the central parts of Mölndal that connects urban culture and green spaces.

Djursjöleden is a 20-kilometre circular trail in the lowlands at Bunketorp in Lindome and is suitable for beginners. Along the trail there are several shelters and barbecue areas. Rådasjön runt is also laid out as a circular route: the marked, 12-kilometre route runs mainly along gravelled nature paths through deciduous forest near the lake.

The marked Sandsjöbackaleden hiking trail runs from north to south through the part of the Sandsjöbacka nature reserve located in Mölndal Municipality. Sandsjöbacka is known for its extensive heathlands; up to 150 bird species can be observed in the nature reserve.

Nature, Views and Wildlife Watching

Änggårdsbergen has a well-developed network of paths. Signs there provide information about the distances to the various areas. The area also contains an arboretum with a collection of exotic trees from various parts of the Northern Hemisphere that is described as unique in Sweden and worth seeing. Bredfjället in Änggårdsbergen is a viewpoint overlooking the western parts of Gothenburg.

Safjället is a wooded mountain plateau in Mölndal with numerous roads and paths. There are graves from the Stone, Bronze and Iron Ages, as well as remains of a hillfort. Another prominent landscape feature is the ravine, which is also called Svejserdalen. It is surrounded by beech forest, which is unusual at this latitude.

The Hårssjön-Rambo mosse area includes deciduous forest, lakeshore and swamp forests, as well as a mosaic of moorlands. Activities mentioned there include birdwatching, hiking, orienteering, horse riding and cycling. Hårssjön is a shallow lake suitable for birdwatching and has an observation tower.

Culture and History

Mölndal City Museum preserves collections containing almost 40,000 images and objects. The museum can be reached by bus, tram and commuter train via the Mölndals bro, Mölndals innerstad or Mölndal station stops.

Kvarnbyn is considered Mölndal’s industrial-historical cradle and a cultural environment of national interest. Its history can be explored with the help of information boards along the rapids and on the buildings. The Mölndalsfallen waterfalls are also part of this context; they have a 48-metre drop and are illuminated at night.

Gunnebo Slott was built between 1784 and 1796. The patron was the Gothenburg merchant John Hall the Elder, and the architect was Carl Wilhelm Carlberg. Gunnebo Slott och Trädgårdar offers guided tours of the castle and the green cultural heritage landscape year-round. In the Gunnebo cultural reserve, visitors can stroll through the historic gardens; at the same time, the cultural reserve features a well-preserved 18th-century landscape.

Water and Cycling Routes

Åbybadet has a family area with two play pools and four water slides. When cycling in Mölndal’s natural areas, cycling is permitted only on designated roads and paths and only during certain periods.
