Holiday apartment in Mellerud between Lake Vänern, the canal and culture
Mellerud is part of the Dalsland region on the western shore of Lake Vänern. The municipality connects Kroppefjäll in the west with Lake Vänern in the east; in between lie forests, lakes, canal landscapes and open plains. The Dalsland Canal provides a particular seasonal reference point: every year from June to August, it is open to boat traffic.
Nature
The landscape is also represented by several nature reserves. Buterud Nature Reserve can be reached via a path from Håverud or by canoe along the Dalsland Canal. Deciduous forests with numerous yew trees grow there, and the rare pea vetch and orchids can also be found. The forests provide habitats for several woodpecker species.
Forsbo Nature Reserve is one of the most species-rich areas in Dalsland and is home to around 80 endangered or Red List species. Visitors can park at the lock or at the Dalslands Museum and follow the Pilgrimsleden north into the reserve. Forsbo can be reached by car via Håverud, and by bus as far as Upperud. The Pilgrimsleden Dalsland is generally classified as moderately difficult, marked in orange and designed for the entire route to take approximately four to five days of hiking.
Water and trails
On Lake Vänern lies Vita Sannar, a long, gently sloping sandy beach with a jetty leading to the rocks, benches, changing rooms and toilets. Vita Sannar can be reached by car, bicycle and on foot; there is a large car park with bicycle stands nearby.
In Håverud, the history of hydraulic engineering combines with striking bridges. The Akvedukten i Håverud solved the problem of canal construction caused by soft rock and a deep, gorge-like valley. A railway bridge and a road bridge are also located at the same site. The Kanalmuseet in Håverud presents the history of the Dalsland Canal and life along the rivers, lakes and canal from the 1800s to the present day.
Culture
Melleruds Museum presents historic residential and everyday-life settings from various periods. These include a dwelling hut belonging to poor rural inhabitants, a farmhouse kitchen and a bourgeois room. Hantverksgatan offers insights into historic professions, including blacksmith, tailor, shoemaker and ironer. The Dalaborg room also contains a reconstruction model of the medieval Dalaborg Castle. The castle was built at Lake Vänern in 1304 and burned down in 1434 during Engelbrekt's uprising.
Dalslands Konstmuseum is situated on a hill overlooking Lake Spången in a formerly industrial environment. The museum has a permanent collection and presents exhibitions of contemporary art from March to November. The grounds include a guest jetty and parking spaces for cars; bus connections are available via the stop at the Upperud lock on route 720. The park contains sculptures and walking paths, and there is a guest jetty by the lake with swimming access.
The museum grounds of Kroppefjälls Hembygdsförening include relocated historic buildings, a herb garden with around 350 plants and a geological hill with rock types from Dalsland. The museum presents the regional slate industry in an indoor and outdoor exhibition. It is located in the former restaurant of Rostocks Brunn- och Badeanstalt and displays objects from the health spa era and the local area.
History
Rostocks Brunn operated as a health spa until 1948, bringing an approximately 300-year chapter of Dals Rostock's history to an end. Örtagården in Dals Rostock contains around 250 plants and conveys the history and use of medicinal plants in connection with the former health spa.
Åsnebyn is a cultural reserve established in 2008 with a farm whose origins date back to the Middle Ages. Traces of earlier times have been preserved in the landscape. Kulturbruket på Dal in the centre of Mellerud offers another way to explore regional history, with concerts, theatre, dance, comedy and lectures in a concert hall with 243 seats.

The Visit Dalsland Center in Håverud offers seasonal tourist information with brochures and maps for Mellerud and Dalsland. The Center also has exhibition and concert halls as well as a café. Its facilities also include a grocery market selling regionally produced food.
