Gothenburg combines a wide variety of attractions, museums, established urban landscapes and the island world of the Gothenburg archipelago. Numerous different facets of the city lie between science and entertainment, parklands and historic districts. The spectrum therefore ranges from interactive exhibitions and rides to fika, art, nature and ferry connections to the southern islands.

Experiences

At the animal park in Slottsskogen, you can visit animals all year round; admission is free. Liseberg offers rides and other attractions. The offerings include carousels for small children as well as adrenaline rides and haunted houses for older visitors. At Universeum, science, technology and mathematics can be explored through experiences covering topics from atoms and artificial intelligence to ecosystems and equations.

A special addition to this is Wisdome, Sweden’s largest full-dome visualisation dome. A Wisdome show can be booked either as part of a Universeum visit or as a standalone experience. The aquarium at Sjöfartsmuseet Akvariet is home to animals and fish from all over the world. The museum also has one of Europe’s largest aquariums for living coral. In an interactive ship simulator, you can navigate a vessel into the port of Gothenburg.

The Aeroseum presents exhibitions mainly focusing on topics related to the Cold War, as well as aviation. Several aircraft and a helicopter are available in the simulator hall. Interactive exhibitions and aerostations offer the opportunity to experiment with technology and physics.

Nature

The cultivated section of Gothenburg Botanical Garden covers 20 hectares and is home to 20,000 species and cultivars from more than 130 countries. The botanical garden’s 55-hectare arboretum is located in the Änggårdsbergen nature reserve. Scheduled public guided tours take place throughout the year; guided visits are offered for private groups whenever possible. Slottsskogen also has large lawns for picnics.

The southern islands of the Gothenburg archipelago can be reached by public ferries from the Saltholmen or Stenpiren ferry terminals in central Gothenburg. The Gothenburg archipelago offers beautiful beaches and nature reserves. There are also hidden swimming spots, saunas overlooking the Vinga lighthouse and seal safaris.

Culture and history

The Museum of Gothenburg presents four permanent exhibitions on the history of Gothenburg. The period covered ranges from the medieval Silver Heart to the world’s first Volvo. The collection at Röhsska museet comprises around 50,000 objects from the fields of design, applied arts and fashion. The permanent exhibition Designhistorier displays more than 500 objects from the museum’s collection. The open storage facility also features a selection of chairs; the associated collection spans more than 300 years.

Röda Sten Konsthall offers guided tours, lectures and creative workshops in connection with its exhibitions. The art gallery presents exhibitions by Swedish and international artists across four floors. The forms of expression represented include painting, photography, dance, performances, as well as video and sound art.

Slottsskogen also has its own historical character: the park was laid out in 1874 with large lawns, winding paths, a zoo, houses modelled on country-specific residential styles and a dance pavilion.

Cityscape and culinary delights

Haga is one of the oldest districts in Gothenburg. Cobblestones and distinctive Landshövdingehus houses define the cityscape. On Haga Nygata, you will find boutiques as well as shops selling antiques, design and handicrafts. The cafés in Haga serve Swedish fika classics as well as other sweet and savoury dishes.

In the heart of Gothenburg lies World of Volvo, a brand experience centre that brings together the past and the future. This means that historic collections, design and technology stand alongside the shops and cafés in Haga in the city.

You can also visit the local pages for Hovås and Kvisljungeby.
