Holiday apartment in Essunga: churches, nature and trails in Nossebro

A special rhythm shapes Essunga: Nossebro Marknad takes place on the last Wednesday of every month. There you will find genuine handicrafts, locally produced raw materials and carefully selected delicacies. The market thus combines a regular date with a specific mix of craft and culinary offerings.

Local life

The area's former transport history is also visible in the town. The disused railway line between Nossebro and Essunga station is now extensively used as a walking and cycling path. Nossebro bad och camping also has a heated outdoor swimming pool with a water slide and an adjacent children's pool.

Nature and trails

Several routes make the landscape around Nossebro accessible at different lengths. Hälsans Stig is a five-kilometre loop with every kilometre marked. At Högaberget there are walking loops measuring 0.7 kilometres, two kilometres and 2.5 kilometres, as well as a lit path. Part of the Strandpromenaden route also runs at Högaberget.

Furet is a 55-hectare forest area. A section of the centuries-old Skara–Lödöse route has been preserved there; a short walking loop through the historic road landscape runs along the hollow ways. The hollow ways are public spaces and accessible year-round. You can reach the barbecue area in Furet from Nossebro on foot or by bicycle via the old railway line. At Högaberget, another barbecue area is located on the other side of the suspension bridge near the large oak tree; it can be used.

Essungaleden also runs through Furet and the hollow ways. The 12-kilometre loop begins in the centre of Nossebro, passes through Furet and the hollow ways, and returns to Nossebro. The entire route can be walked. Cycling is possible on most of Essungaleden; the section between the hollow ways and Essunga kyrkby is excluded. Another option is Norra cykelturen, an easy cycling tour through varied nature and culture in the northern part of Essunga Municipality.

The hollow ways in Furet are registered as ancient monuments or archaeological remains. The routes therefore combine specific distance information, a historically preserved road landscape and an officially designated heritage status.

Culture

The churches of Essunga and its surrounding area span several eras. The present building of Kyrkås kyrka dates from the late 17th century. Kyrkås kyrka is known as a votive church: travellers and the sick from near and far donated gifts to the church in order to receive help in times of need. Fåglums kyrka is one of Sweden's oldest churches and has origins in the early Middle Ages. Its interior contains a medieval image of the Madonna.

Bärebergs kyrka has medieval roots. A church and a cemetery already stood there in the 13th century. A church has stood on the site of Essunga kyrka since the Middle Ages. The present church was built in 1903–1905 in the Neoclassical style, with a tall, pointed tower. An old bell from the 15th century hangs in the belfry of Essunga kyrka, which dates from 1963.

The Kulturvandring in Nossebro is easy and adapted for accessibility by bicycles, wheelchairs and prams. Railway history is presented at Stationshuset i Nossebro through photographs and objects from the narrow-gauge railway era; it also shows how the stationmaster lived. Biograf Stjärnan shows films and also offers live broadcasts of operas. Cinema screenings began in the 1920s. Despite its modern technology, Biograf Stjärnan retains its retro style and original ambience.

Another historic object is Väderkvarnen i Fåglum. It was built in 1885 and moved to its present location in 1892.
