Holiday apartment in Dals-Ed – Tresticklan National Park, trails and water
In the northwest of Dalsland lies Tresticklan National Park in the municipality of Dals-Ed, near the Norwegian border. Tresticklan is the largest roadless and undeveloped forest area in southern Sweden. The area therefore combines a clear geographical location with an unusually continuous forest landscape.
Nature and trails
There are three marked trails in the national park: Bodalsvikenleden, Bråtaneslingan and Orshöjdsleden. The Heråmaden Nature Reserve is also one of the municipality’s characteristic natural areas. It covers untouched forests along the Herå River and is almost five square kilometres in size.
A dense network of different routes can be found around Tavlan. The Härvägen hiking trail begins at Tavlan; from Klevmarken, the hike can continue via Ringsmon on trails connected to routes in the Heråmaden Nature Reserve and Tresticklan National Park. From Tresticklan, the Lundsnes Nature Reserve on the Norwegian side of the border can also be reached. Motionsgården Tavlan is an outdoor recreation and activity area with several trails and routes, allowing you to put together your own scenic hiking routes.
Trails designed for both shorter and longer sections are available: The orange hiking trail runs 3.9 kilometres around Sågtjärn and follows forest paths. The red hiking trail is 24.5 kilometres long, runs around the built-up area and past Tavlan to the north; it follows paths and forestry roads and is hilly. When there is sufficient snow, prepared cross-country ski trails measuring 2.6, 4.3 and 22 kilometres are laid out at Tavlan.
Water and landscape
The municipality of Dals-Ed has more than 400 lakes, ponds, rivers and streams. In the Dalsland-Nordmarken lake system, Canodal offers canoe and kayak rental with the necessary equipment, and also provides instruction in paddling techniques and safe conduct on the lake.
The Furustad Nature Reserve is suitable for landing and woodland walks. The easiest way to reach it is by water; alternatively, it can be accessed via a forest road from Valsebo. A special connection across the water is the Sund–Jaren ferry service across Lake Stora Le: it is 900 metres long and takes ten minutes. The municipal fishing permit for Dals-Ed covers 15 fish management areas and makes a fishing trip possible.
History and culture
Several places preserve traces of border and war history. The Hallevägen route between Rävmarken and Bodalsviken was used by border guards and refugees during the Second World War. From January to May 1945, Rävlyckan was one of 14 secret Norwegian military bases on Swedish territory. Parsetjärns skans is a fortification dating from the context of the Second World War; the northern section comprises 13 trenches and a so-called “kg-hatt”. The site can be reached southwest of Ed via Road 166, and there is a rest area beside it.
The preserved architectural and exhibition culture is also diverse. Gäserudsstugan is a local heritage museum and one of the oldest surviving buildings in Dalsland. The grounds include a stable and a rare so-called Stolpbod building; all the buildings are very well preserved inside and out. The Dals-Ed municipal art gallery opened in the library in 2017 and offers a changing, wide-ranging exhibition programme by professional artists and amateurs.
The Eds MC- och Motormuseum displays 700 objects, including historic motorcycles, radios, sewing machines and boat engines. The collection also includes 160 motorcycles manufactured in Europe and the United States. Ed market has stalls, food and coffee, as well as pony rides for children. Café Smör & Socker on the market square in Ed serves homemade fika and open sandwiches.
