Holiday apartment in Borås: art, nature and hiking trails

Borås combines urban culture with easy access to nature. The city is surrounded by forests and lakes and is located about an hour from Gothenburg.

Culture

At Borås Art Museum, you can see national and international contemporary art; admission is free. The Textile Museum preserves a collection of products from the Swedish textile industry dating from the 1870s to the present day. In the museum’s DIY area, tools and materials for visitors’ own sewing projects are available free of charge.

Art is also part of Borås’s urban landscape: there are around 40 murals, most of which were created as part of the former No Limit® festival. More than one hundred sculptures, installations and murals are spread across an area of just under 1.5 kilometres in the city centre. The Hej Borås app offers three different art walks and also shows further sculptures and street art murals in Borås. One art walk in the app is 1.3 kilometres long and starts and ends at Sandwalls Plats.

Nature

The Borås Outdoor Guide shows hiking trails, facilities and nature reserves and provides information on difficulty level, length and amenities. Borås’s 16 nature reserves offer leisure activities such as fishing, birdwatching and hiking.

Rya Åsar is located right next to the centre of Borås. There, trails lead through rocky landscapes and oak forests; there are also lakes and viewpoints. At Rya Åsar, hiking trails cover 2.4, 4 and 9 kilometres with varying levels of difficulty, with the longer trails ranging from moderate to challenging. A low-barrier, 1-kilometre-long trail also leads from Björbobacken to a viewpoint with tables and benches.

In the area around Borås, Vänga mosse offers an easy hike with a rich variety of birdlife. Part of the trail is low-barrier and runs along wide wooden boardwalks. The Storsjöleden hiking trail is 8.5 kilometres long, provides a sense of wilderness and passes traces of the old cultural landscape.

The Linnémarschen routes range from a low-barrier 3-kilometre course to a two-day, 57-kilometre hike with overnight camping. The Linnémarschen hiking event has been held in Borås for more than 40 years and is now considered Sweden’s largest hiking event.

Activities

Borås offers roller-skiing trails as well as cycling and mountain biking routes through beautiful nature and challenging terrain. Winter activities include sledding hills, ice rinks, winter swimming and ski slopes. There are also numerous swimming spots, a snorkelling park and opportunities to use a wood-fired sauna.

The Ymer outdoor recreation area has a disc golf course with 27 holes. Four exercise or hiking trails start from there; on the long Sjuhäradsleden hiking trail, you will also pass Ymergården. In winter, Borås Ski Stadium, with ski slopes and artificial snow capacity, is located directly below the Ymer outdoor recreation area.

In the area around Borås, the canoe route in Bosnäs follows the Bosjön lake system. The entire route takes about two hours by canoe.

Experiences

Around 300 animals from 42 different species live at Borås Zoo. The zoo serves as a centre for species conservation, biological diversity and research.

Navet Science Center offers experiments and interactive discoveries for all age groups. The exhibitions include natural sciences, lightning, mental challenges and outer space.

Getting there

Bus route 100 connects Gothenburg with Borås Central Station; the journey takes just under an hour.
