Alingsås combines Swedish fika culture with historic sites, lake landscapes and special nature experiences. Nolhaga slott, an imposing building in the Italian Neo-Renaissance style dating from the late 19th century, stands in Nolhaga Park. The castle houses the exhibition “FIKA! Från kafferep till en slät kopp”, which explores Swedish fika culture and Alingsås as a café town, as well as the city’s bakery and café history. Nolhaga slott is accessible to visitors with reduced mobility; there is a wheelchair lift at the main entrance, and a lift leads to the exhibition floors.

Culture and history

Alingsås museum is also located in Nolhaga Park. It presents local historical objects, events and people in the historic Alströmerska magasinet. Alingsås Kulturhus comprises Alingsås museum, Alingsås konsthall, Alingsås bibliotek and Palladium. In the Nolhagalabyrinten, 33 panels tell the story of Alingsås. These attractions convey culture in different ways: through exhibitions, local historical objects, events, people and texts about the city’s history.

Nolhaga Park also includes Nolhaga Parkbad, with two 25-metre pools, a leisure pool and a relaxation area. At Nolhaga lantgård, visitors can get up close to Swedish heritage breeds in a petting enclosure. Walking paths, a cycle trail, a bird tower and an observation tower are also part of the park. Lake Mjörn, with a bathing beach, is nearby.

Nature by the water

Nolhagaviken is an area open to visitors for birdwatching. It has a wheelchair-accessible bird tower, and the birdlife is diverse. Part of Nolhagaviken belongs to the Natura 2000 network of protected areas. This means that the focus by the water is both on observing birds and on the special protected status of part of the area.

Gräfsnäs and the heritage railway

The ruins of Gräfsnäs slott are remnants of a castle built in the mid-1550s on a hill that extends into the northern part of Lake Anten. A cultural reserve was established for Gräfsnäsparken in 2010. During the summer months, several events, markets and performances by artists take place in Gräfsnäs slottspark.

Anten-Gräfsnäs Museijärnväg offers a special combination of landscape and technology. It runs steam locomotives along a 12 km route beside Lake Anten. The station area includes a museum, a café, a railway park and a historic station building.

Glacial potholes and trails

Brobacka Nature Reserve reveals traces of the inland ice sheet. It contains around 40 glacial potholes formed by the inland ice; the largest glacial pothole has a diameter of 18 m. Brobacka Nature Reserve also contains a small soldiers’ cottage with an exhibition. A well-signposted hiking trail of approximately 1 to 1.5 km leads through the glacial pothole area to an observation platform and a lookout point on the mountain. Guided tours of varying lengths and difficulty levels are offered in the area, including storytelling walks for children.

At Dammsjöås, a 2.6 km nature and cultural trail runs past around ten information panels.

On foot, on the water and by train

The Gotaleden trail passes through Alingsås via quiet forests, along Lake Mjörn and through Kongo to the picturesque town centre. The trail is divided into nine stages, which are easily accessible from commuter train stations along the route. Commuter trains run from Gothenburg to Alingsås every half hour; the journey takes about 40 minutes.

The lakes Mjörn, Anten and Sävelången are also among the excursion destinations mentioned: Fishing Sweden offers guided fishing tours there. KAYAKOMAT allows visitors to rent kayaks and SUP boards for paddling in Alingsås.
