Nature

Skinnskatteberg Municipality comprises twelve nature reserves. There are also 244 lakes and waterways here that shape the municipality’s landscape. The Bruksleden passes through sections of the entire municipality. In addition, the municipality’s nature map lists cycling routes, longer hikes and shorter loop trails. There is no physical tourist office in Skinnskatteberg Municipality.

In the Örtjärnsskogen Nature Reserve, the trail is approximately three kilometres long. It is part of the Bruksleden, which continues beyond the nature reserve. This means that a single section of trail is also connected to a longer network of paths. Traces and monuments from the era of the ironworks can also be found throughout the municipality.

Culture and history

A notable historic site is Skinnskattebergs herrgård. The manor house was built in 1779 by Wilhelm Hising; the manor and ironworks surroundings are part of the Ekomuseum Bergslagen. Röda Jorden contains the oldest known evidence of iron production in Bergslagen. There are five bloomery furnaces along a two-kilometre hiking trail. Every summer, iron is produced using traditional methods during Röda Jordens dag.

Karmansbo has a unique, well-preserved ironworks setting with a forge, manor house and workers’ housing. The forge preserves a seven-tonne trip hammer that was powered by a waterwheel. Järnets Dag takes place in Karmansbo every year on the first Saturday in July. Lienshyttan was in operation until 1959.

The Bastnäs mining field is also one of the area’s special historic sites and is considered one of the most mineral-rich places in the world. Bastnäs is also home to the only preserved Hakspel in the world in its original location. In Riddarhyttan stands Lokstallet & KURJ, the only preserved locomotive shed along the Köping–Uttersberg–Riddarhyttan railway line. The water tank in the tower of Lokstallet & KURJ houses an exhibition about the railway and industry in Riddarhyttan.

The former railway station area in Uttersberg is home to Galleri Astley and a sculpture park. This former station area is also a nature reserve with an acoustic park. The connection between railway, industrial and art history thus remains visible in a place that is also protected as a nature reserve.

Landscape and bodies of water

Iron was already being processed in the Skräppbo Cultural Reserve as early as the 15th century. There are also traces of the inland ice dating back 10,000 years. Haraldsjön in the Skräppbo Cultural Reserve is a spring-fed lake and, at 53 metres, the deepest lake in Västmanland.

In Kolarbyn, visitors can stay in charcoal burners’ huts and cook over an open fire. Another sports-oriented facility is the Borntorpets spårcentral ski-track centre. It is used for exercise, hiking, skiing and running. In summer, the ski track from Borntorpets spårcentral becomes a lit running trail that can also be used during the hours of darkness.
