Holiday apartment in Kramfors – discover the High Coast World Heritage Site

Kramfors is situated on the banks of the Ångermanälven. The High Coast visitor destination comprises the four municipalities of Kramfors, Örnsköldsvik, Härnösand and Sollefteå. The High Coast World Heritage Site is located in the municipalities of Kramfors and Örnsköldsvik. In 2000, the High Coast was awarded World Heritage status because of its unique geology shaped by land uplift; the relative land uplift there amounts to 286 metres above today’s sea level.

Nature

A defining natural area is Skuleskogen National Park. It opened in 1984, covers 295 hectares and is located in the municipalities of Kramfors and Örnsköldsvik. Almost 3.5 Swedish miles, or around 35 kilometres, of hiking trails are available. The national park has three entrances: South, North and West. Skuleskogen National Park has several overnight cabins and offers the possibility of camping.

Skuleberget is also part of the landscape. The mountain is 295 metres high and has been a nature reserve since 1969; around 260 different plant species have been recorded there. The summit of Skuleberget can be reached on foot from both sides. Another option is the Skuleberget cable car: it takes visitors to the summit in around 25 minutes and crosses the highest marine limit in the world. Skuleskogen National Park is also home to a 200-metre-long, approximately 40-metre-deep and around six-metre-wide rock crevice. From there, the view extends over Tärnättvattnen and Näskefjärden.

Hiking

The High Coast Trail runs for 128 kilometres through the High Coast World Heritage area and is divided into 13 stages. Each stage offers at least one overnight accommodation option under a solid roof. The stages are arranged so that their starting and ending points can be reached by car.

Valkallen, a viewpoint located 240 metres above sea level, lies along the High Coast Trail. From there, there is a view of the mouth of the Ångermanälven, the High Coast Bridge, Hemsön and the Storön nature reserve. The Ådalen 31 demonstration trail between Frånö Folkets hus and Lunde Folkets hus is also among the routes mentioned. It is approximately five kilometres long and is recommended as a hiking tip.

History and culture

Borgberget near Stensätter is home to one of Sweden’s three northernmost hillforts. The fortification is considered the best-preserved from its period, the Migration Period from AD 400 to 800. The Witch Museum at Hola Folk High School in Prästmon explores the history of the witch trials and the related events in the region. A total of 71 people were executed on Häxberget in connection with the witch trials of 1674. This is described as Sweden’s largest documented mass execution in peacetime.

The events of Ådalen 31 in Lunde began on 14 May 1931 with a peaceful demonstration from Frånö to Lunde and ended with five fatalities after the military opened fire. In summer, Frånö Folkets hus and Lunde Folkets hus offer information and exhibitions. Lunde is also home to a well-known sculpture by Lenny Clarhäll.

Svanö preserves surviving industrial environments from the sawmill and pulp industries. These include buildings from the late 19th century and later periods. The historic visitor sites on Svanö are connected by easy-to-walk paths; parking is available at Svanö Folkets hus and the harbour. The old church of Nordingrå was probably built around 1200 in the Romanesque style, with a narrower chancel. Its excavated ruin includes seven surviving gravestones and shows various construction phases over the centuries.

The Kulturfabriken cultural centre in Mjällom is housed in a former shoe factory and includes a café, art and craft exhibitions, a museum section and a flea market.

Getting there

Kramfors resecentrum is the central hub for public transport in the municipality and brings together train and bus services. It offers, among other things, seating, toilets and food options. Kramfors can be reached by bus, train, boat and plane. From Kramfors, there are travel connections within the municipality as well as to Örnsköldsvik, Sollefteå, Härnösand and beyond.

The High Coast Distillery offers guided tours and tastings throughout the year. The High Coast Distillery in Bjärtrå offers guided distillery tours, a visitor centre, a café and lunch. In Kramfors, the sweet speciality is called KRAMFORSKAKA; it is also known by several other names, such as Chokladrutor, Kärleksmums and Kokosrutor.
