Discover Härnösand: Holiday apartment between coast, nature and culture
Situated on both sides of the Härnösundet strait, Härnösand has an urban structure that has always been strongly shaped by its maritime character. There are three guest harbours in the centre: Norra hamnen, Kanaludden on Södra Sundet, and the guest harbour by the boathouses in Nattviken.
Nature and trails
Smitingen is a nature reserve featuring unusual traces of wave action and geological processes. The Grottstigen trail at Smitingen follows the water directly to tunnel caves carved out by the waves. Two geology trails pass rauks, potholes and depressions there.
The Härnöleden begins at Härnösand Central Station, making it directly accessible by train or bus. It passes through urban areas and forests, over mountains and along the sea. The Gådeåleden is also located a few kilometres south of the central station. This easy-to-walk 5.6-kilometre trail connects Lövudden with Sparrudden at the mouth of the Gådeån. Vårdkasen also has two signposted loop trails specifically suitable for mountain biking.
Lakes, islands and waterways
Värptjärn is an accessible fishing area south of Härnösand. Rainbow trout and perch can be caught there. The small lake Godstjärn, close to the edge of town, is known for its large colony of breeding herring gulls and a birdwatching tower. Fishing jetties, a wind shelter and a rest area are available for fishing or taking a break.
On Vålön, a nature trail runs around the island. The landscape features shaped by land uplift and rock surfaces polished by the inland ice, as well as the remains of Nöjestemplet and Jaktstugan, reveal traces of the inland ice, the sawmill era and the rise of the temperance movement.
The Älandsån is a waterway worthy of protection with significant natural values. Reproducing freshwater pearl mussels and migrating sea trout are found there. Culture and history
Västernorrlands Museum is a cultural history museum with a main building and an open-air museum at Murberget in Härnösand. Murberget Open-Air Museum includes houses and environments from the 19th and 20th centuries. Technichus complements the cultural offering as a science centre for children, young people and adults.
Härnösands konsthall displays art, objects and furniture from the Qvistska Samlingen, including works by Matisse, Chagall and Picasso. A digital tour of Härnösand’s public art provides a map as well as views and information about individual artworks.
The present-day Härnösand Cathedral was built in 1846 in the Neoclassical style. Domkapitelhuset in Härnösand has been protected as a listed building since 1995. At Hemsö Fortress, guided tours explore Swedish military history and the secrets of the Cold War deep inside the mountain. The fortress is designated a state-listed historic monument and is located on the 140-metre-high Storråberget, which offers extensive views over the sea, islands and coast.
Gin and tailor-made experiences
The Hernö Gin Distillery offers gin tastings by prior booking. The tastings include five different gins, as well as information about botanicals and factors that influence aroma and flavour. On request, Hernö Gin offers tailor-made experiences that may include dinner and activities.
