Björna: Wilderness Trail, River Landscape and Historic Sites
Accommodation in Björna
Björna combines vast natural landscapes with traces of regional history. The 53-kilometre, partly hilly Urskogsleden wilderness trail offers a journey through diverse landscapes and leads to several remarkable places. Those looking for a holiday apartment in Björna can therefore decide in advance what kind of trip they want: Should the stay focus primarily on hiking, the river landscape, historical discoveries or a mixture of these?
The Urskogsleden between the river and nature reserves
From Björna Camping, the Urskogsleden follows the Gideälven along the Flottarstigen. On its northern route, the trail passes five nature reserves. This makes it suitable for travellers who want to include a longer nature route in their plans. Its length and partly hilly character are important factors when planning daily stages and itineraries.
The surrounding area also offers a variety of landscape impressions. The Holmens nature reserve is located in Kravattsliden, 7 to 8 kilometres northwest of Björna, and is easily accessible by car. Kravattsliden is also home to a forge used in the 19th century for the production of iron ore; a 1-kilometre detour from the Urskogsleden leads there. Stockholmsgatorna is a rocky gorge formed by a glacial meltwater stream and is also a nature reserve. Trolltjärn is designated as a Natura 2000 site.
Church, open-air museum and railway history
The Urskogsleden continues to Björna Church, built in 1853. The church and cemetery are located on Tärnhålla, an exposed rocky ridge. Björna’s local heritage museum courtyard is also of interest to visitors interested in cultural history: it consists of a relocated old farmstead that was originally built in the early 18th century. The farmstead includes a bakehouse dating from 1701.
Further historical points of interest cover a range of subjects. The Aspsele stone bridge was built in 1919. Next to the railway stands an old pump house for steam locomotives. Up to 60 trains passed through Björna every day – a detail that illustrates the importance of the railway to the history of the village without limiting today’s stay to a single theme.
River, views and special travel experiences
The fishing area along the Gideälven extends between Björna Power Station and Gammelby Power Station. Pike, perch, zander, grayling and trout are found downstream from Björna Power Station. The Gideälven is therefore a focus in its own right for visitors interested in river landscapes and fishing.
From the terrace of Gideberget, there are views over the village and Lake Ledingsjön. The Urskogsloppet race offers an opportunity to experience a sporting tradition: it starts in Berg in Hemling and ends every year at Björnadagen in Björna. Snowmobile trails from Björna also lead far into the mountain landscape.
Which accommodation suits your travel plans
A holiday apartment or holiday home in Björna can serve as a base for a trip where you deliberately combine individual experiences. Realistic itinerary planning is important for longer routes such as the Urskogsleden. Those who prefer cultural attractions can focus on the church, cemetery, local heritage museum courtyard, bakehouse and railway history. The Gideälven, the fishing area and the view from Gideberget, on the other hand, favour a trip with a stronger focus on landscapes and nature.
