Holiday apartment in Ånge: Nature, Culture and Hiking Trails

Ånge combines free-flowing water, protected landscapes, historic trails and museums with unusual places to experience. Between river channels, bridges, cave formations and viewpoints, a diverse picture emerges in which nature and cultural themes are closely interconnected.

The Ånge tourist office is located at the Borgsjö rest area along the E14.

Nature

Haverö strömmar is located where the Ljungan flows out of Kyrksjön. There, the river divides into three channels. The free-flowing water has high biological conservation value because this type of habitat is rare today. The Haverö strömmar nature reserve has trails and several rest areas. The northern rest area at Kvarnströmmen and the southernmost one at Strömnäset can also be reached with a pram or rollator. There is also a restored fishing hut from the early 20th century.

The buildings at Gammelbodarna are well preserved, giving the area high overall value. The land and buildings at Gammelbodarna are privately owned; visitors are asked to bear this in mind during their visit.

Rankleven is designated as a nature reserve and a Natura 2000 site. The ascent can be made via two trails that are less than two kilometres long; it is steep and rocky, and from the summit there is an impressive view over the Ljungan Valley. Rankleven can be reached by bus to the Södra Sillre stop; from there, it is 600 metres along the road to the start of the mountain trail.

Snödskallegrottan presents a different type of landscape: the cave formation is 57 metres long and has a fairly steep entrance. This leads via a stair-like formation to Kerstins sal, from which several short side passages branch off.

Culture

The Vikbron in Fränsta is Sweden’s longest wooden bridge of its kind and spans the Ljungan for 133 metres. The trail on the north side of the Vikbron forms part of the St. Olav’s Trail. The Vikbron is currently being restored and therefore cannot be accessed; it is scheduled to reopen in summer 2027.

The log-driving station at Eldnäset was established in the 19th century by Ljunga Elfs Flottningsbolag and used until 1968, when log driving on the Ljungan was discontinued. Eldnäsets Flottningsmuseum displays documentation, old photographs and equipment from the log-driving industry. There is also an auditorium where old films from Haverö and a picture presentation are shown.

Gösta Sundins slöjdmuseum in Västanå (Borgsjö) is run by his sons Ronny and Roger and displays detailed models of the former smallholder society. The collection comprises more than 300 groups with over 10,000 objects.

Fiskehuset in Alby is located in Alderströmmen. It was built in the 1870s and was used until the mid-1960s to catch trout, salmon, grayling and eels.

Activities

Boda Borg Torpshammar is an indoor adventure experience where groups complete 22 unique quests with different themes and settings. The quests combine problem-solving, teamwork and various levels of physical activity.

The ski slope on Getberget reaches an elevation of 348 metres above sea level at its upper end. It has a vertical drop of 140 metres and a length of 510 metres, and is served by two lifts.

Gösundaberget has a rest cabin and a wind shelter. A very beautiful hiking trail leads there; the ascent takes about 45 minutes. Naturum Ånge offers an exhibition as well as activities and guided excursions throughout the year.

The St. Olav’s Trail runs from Selånger in the east to Trondheim in the west, is approximately 580 kilometres long in total and can also be explored in shorter stages.

Geography

Flataklocken was designated as the geographical centre of Sweden in 1947 based on a calculation by KTH in Stockholm of the centre of gravity of Sweden’s landmass. From Flataklocken, there is a 360-degree view over the Medelpad landscape. An accessible gravel path leads up to the restaurant at Flataklocken.
