Holiday apartment in Åsele: Nature, culture and winter trails

Åsele is located in the forested land between the mountains and the coast. The Ångermanälven flows through the municipality. There are opportunities for recreation and leisure activities, including fishing, swimming, canoeing and boat trips. In winter, the Ångermanälven is a frequently used route for walking, skiing and snowmobiling.

Nature

The Stockholmsgata Nature Reserve contains a 1.5-kilometre-long and 50-metre-deep ravine. The area provides a habitat for rare lichens such as Schattensprößlingsflechte and Faden-Knorpelflechte, as well as species such as the Siberian jay, three-toed woodpecker and capercaillie.

In the Stenbithöjden Nature Reserve, a hiking trail leads to Höjdakojan. There is a room and four sleeping places there; from Höjdakojan, you can continue walking to Toppstugan.

The Åslia Magical Forest Trail begins at the car park by Åslia's Toppstuga, which can be reached by car via a gravel road. Along the trail through the pine forest, there are several wind shelters with fire pits.

Bergvattenberget, popularly known as Offerhällan, is a viewpoint in Sörnoret. The hiking trail there has an elevation difference of 120 metres and some steeper sections; at the summit there is a wind shelter and a fire pit.

Culture

The Åsele Hembygdsområde in the centre of Åsele comprises 17 buildings and 50 exhibitions. In summer, guided tours of the grounds and buildings are offered. Åsele Hembygdsområde includes, among other things, a clothing museum and an exhibition on the history of the Sámi people in the municipality.

Torvsjö Kvarnar is a water-powered facility that is still in operation. Since 1972, it has been a legally protected historic building and a cultural environment of national interest; the facility is open to visitors. At Torvsjö Kvarnar, an easily accessible hiking trail also runs along the Kvarnbäcken.

Åsele Marknad is a four-day summer market with origins dating back to the 17th century. One gable end of Åsele Kulturhus has been decorated with a large mural since summer 2019, created by the artist Q (Anya Blom).

At Tegelbacksgården, traditional tunnbröd, blodbröd, fikabröd and other products baked on the farm are offered.

Water and trails

Stamsjöbadet is a gently sloping bathing area with a sandy beach, about 4 km from the centre of Åsele. The bathing area includes a jetty, barbecue areas and a large car park. Stamsjöbadet can be reached by bicycle, car or on foot.

Kyrkstigen is Åsele's closest hiking trail to the town. The trail begins in Norrstrand at Gamla Lyckselevägen and leads through the forest to Älgsjö.

Vitterhuset is a rock formation in the village of Östernoret, about 12 km outside Åsele's town centre. From the Östernoret bathing area, the rock formation can be reached via an easy hike through Vittermyren and the forest.

Rangelsten is a boulder formed by the inland ice, approximately 7 metres high and 4 metres wide, with an almost flat top and a panoramic view. The boulder can be reached from Rangelberget via a marked trail; Rangelberget can be reached by car.

Winter

Åslia is a ski resort with lifts, about 3.5 km from the centre of Åsele. In winter, the illuminated cross-country ski track in the centre of Åsele is prepared for both classic cross-country skiing and freestyle. In summer, the track can be used for walking, jogging and running.

Excursions

The Angsjön main entrance to Björnlandet National Park can be reached from Åsele via Route 92 towards Umeå. From the turn-off, an approximately 24-kilometre-long gravel road leads to the main entrance.

Konstvägen – Sju älvar is a 350-kilometre-long outdoor art exhibition with 13 artworks. It runs from Holmsund on the coast in the east to Borgafjäll in southern Lapland in the west, combining experiences of nature with sites of cultural and historical interest.
