Holiday apartment in Sunne: Fryken, nature and culture

Sunne is located on Lake Fryken and is characterised by deep forests and open meadows. Here, nature trails, historic sites, leisure activities and regional cuisine come together between the water, landscape and local life to create a diverse destination in Värmland.

Nature

Sundsbergs friluftsområde is located close to the centre of Sunne and offers hiking trails and nature paths. The Sundsbergsleden trail runs through the area, passing through aspen forests with thick trunks and a herb-rich stream valley, and by Torp Skogsbacken. In winter, Sundsbergs friluftsområde has illuminated cross-country ski trails and a toboggan run.

In the vicinity of Sunne, Gettjärnsklätten is a hyperite mountain with extensive views as well as interesting flora and insect life. Kalvhöjden Nature Reserve preserves an ancient, traditionally managed cultural landscape in Finnbygden with a rich variety of flora. Also in the vicinity of Sunne is Sånebyklätten, a gravel formation created by meltwater; a marked path leads through the reserve for approximately 400 plus 300 metres.

Lake Björken is a wetland rich in birdlife in the vicinity of Sunne, with an observation tower, hiking trails, and rest and barbecue areas. Tiskaretjärn Nature Reserve preserves an old-fashioned cultural landscape with a living culture and traditional management. In the vicinity of Sunne, the Ängenleden trail also passes the old vaulted stone bridge “Putrale” and parts of Kyrkvägen, dating from the 17th-century Finnish settlement.

Culture

In the vicinity of Sunne, Mårbacka has been preserved as a memorial estate and is shown to the public on guided tours. The grounds include a park, gardens, a historic setting, exhibitions and outdoor activities. Rottneros Park is also located nearby, a flower and sculpture park with themed gardens and around 100 sculptures and reliefs.

The Alma Löv Museum of Unexp Art is one of the attractions in Sunne. Teaterbiografen in Sunne is one of Sweden’s oldest cinemas that still shows films. The Sunne open-air museum is located on the outskirts of Sunne and includes a school museum. Its archive contains around 5,000 old photographs.

In the vicinity of Sunne, Berättarladan is connected to Sunne by a walking and cycling path. In addition to the museums and historic sites, this provides connections between the town and the cultural offerings in the surrounding area.

Leisure

Sunne Ski & Bike offers ski slopes for the whole family; in summer, the slopes are used for downhill cycling. In the centre of Sunne, directly on Fryken, Mejeriängen offers a pump track, a children’s playground and barbecue areas.

Sunne Sommarland has almost 20 different attractions and offers water slides. The attractions also include a Wipeout course on Lake Fryken. The leisure activities therefore range from winter cross-country ski trails and tobogganing opportunities to downhill skiing and downhill cycling, as well as activities by the water and in the town centre.

Food and drink

In the vicinity of Sunne, at the entrance to Rottneros Park, there is a café offering light meals, ice cream and fika. Sunne’s culinary offering includes cafés by Fryken, local bakeries, and restaurants serving Värmland flavours and ingredients from the region.

In the vicinity of Sunne, the historic mill in Stöpafors produces skrädmjöl. Thus, in addition to cafés, bakeries and restaurants, traditional regional products are also part of the town’s culinary character.

Getting there

Sunne can be reached by train, bus or car. The Fryksdalsbanan railway takes travellers to Sunne by train and is considered one of Sweden’s most beautiful railway lines. In the centre of Sunne, there is a 24-hour motorhome parking area at Nytorget.
