Karlstad: Holiday Apartments, Nature Trails and Culture
Karlstad lies where Sweden’s longest river meets Europe’s third-largest lake. Between river landscapes, natural areas, historic sites and cultural institutions, the city and its immediate surroundings offer a diverse range of experiences.
Nature
Alsterdalen encompasses lush deciduous forest with diverse habitats where numerous plants and animals thrive. The Alsterdalsleden runs through this landscape. The approximately 2-kilometre-long hiking trail begins at Frödingsstenen and follows the Alsterälven through lush deciduous forest with wooden walkways, bridges and steps.
The Frödingleden also connects various points along the way: it runs from Kroppkärr to Alsterdalen and features a birdwatching tower, picnic areas and barbecue areas. The section from Kroppkärr to Alsters herrgård is 5.1 kilometres long; the detour to the birdwatching tower is 0.8 kilometres each way.
Skutberget is a natural area for recreation, swimming and training all year round. At Skutberget, visitors can hike, run, mountain bike, paddle, climb, play disc golf, beach volleyball and adventure golf. The Skutbergsleden also begins there, running for approximately 22 kilometres from the Vänern shore to the municipality of Kil through the three nature reserves of Sörmon, Högemon and Kilsravinerna.
The Karlstad region has around 40 different hiking trails and several nature reserves; many of them are easily accessible and centrally located, and some are also adapted for accessibility. Another natural attraction is located in Mariebergsskogen: Naturum Värmland lies there among old forest, wet meadows and water, offering a nature exhibition to be explored with all the senses, as well as an area about Värmland’s large predators.
Culture
Alsters herrgård is Gustaf Fröding’s memorial estate and birthplace. Annual events at Alsters herrgård include the Midsummer celebration, the Gundegabaletten, the Fröding Days and a Christmas market. The café at Alsters herrgård serves manor-house lunches, coffee, homemade pastries and Italian ice cream.
The Värmlands Museum presents the regional history of Värmland alongside internationally renowned art and photography exhibitions. Permanent exhibitions include “Life in Värmland”, “Insights & Viewpoints”, “Sandbergs’ fairytale land” and “The Future Lab”. Sandgrund Lars Lerin is a permanent art gallery in Karlstad featuring a year-round exhibition by Lars Lerin as well as the Vita Rummet exhibition space.
The Brigadmuseum is an interactive military museum about the Cold War in Sweden from 1945 to 1991. The courtyard of the Brigadmuseum contains several military vehicles and can be visited free of charge around the clock. The Brigadmuseum’s micro-bakery offers savoury sandwiches and homemade pastries and strives to use locally sourced and organic ingredients wherever possible.
Mariebergsskogen is Karlstad’s city park, open every day all year round and offering free admission. In summer, the Conrad Höök sightseeing train offers daily guided tours through Mariebergsskogen, taking in its nature, waterways, cultural buildings and Lillskogen. The open-air museum in Mariebergsskogen is a kind of Värmland version of Skansen, with cultural buildings from the 18th century and later periods.
Karlstad Cathedral is open daily. Visitors can climb the tower’s 200 steps. The church was built between 1723 and 1730. Wermland Opera presents opera, musical and orchestral productions in Karlstad.
