Gåsborn: History of a Mining Settlement
Accommodation in Gåsborn
Gåsborn is considered Värmland’s best-preserved mining settlement. The local history has several points of reference: Gåsborns hytta, first mentioned in the land register in 1584; the eventful history of Gåsborn Church; and the local history museum next to the church. This combination of industrial, church and local history makes Gåsborn especially interesting if you would like to focus your stay on regional culture.
Mining Settlement and Early Industrial History
Gåsborns hytta was first mentioned in the land register in 1584. This early date adds a specific reference to industrial history to its characterization as a mining settlement. It clearly predates the church’s milestones in the 17th and 20th centuries. This makes it possible to explore different chapters of local history, each with its own dates: the early mention of the hytta and the church’s later construction phases.
The History of Gåsborn Church
The first church in Gåsborn was built in 1652. After this church and another were destroyed by fires, today’s Gåsborn Church was rebuilt in 1946–47 and inaugurated in 1947. The sequence therefore includes the early church building, two churches destroyed by fires, and the rebuilding of the present-day building. The dates 1946–47 mark the rebuilding phase, while 1947 marks the inauguration—different stages in the church’s history.
Art and church practice are also part of the picture: a monumental mural by artist Simon Sörman is located on the altar wall. According to a parish website updated on February 16, 2026, the church bells are still rung by hand. The building’s history, a named work of art and the hand-ringing of the bells each offer a different way to understand the church.
Local History Museum Next to the Church
Gåsborn’s local history museum is next to the church and displays historical objects from the area’s past. Their close proximity brings together two different ways of exploring local history: the church has its own building history, which can be traced through several dates, while the museum focuses on historical objects from the area. If you are particularly interested in the history of a building, the church is the point of reference. If you would like to focus on historical objects from the region, the local history museum offers a different emphasis.
A Public Music Café at Klintgården
On February 20, 2026, a public music café featuring songs, storytelling and folk music was held at Klintgården in Gåsborn. Unlike the church’s building history or the objects in the local history museum, the focus here was on a single cultural evening. The event adds another dimension to Gåsborn’s story, bringing music and oral storytelling together.

With children, these different perspectives can provide conversation starters: the sequence of church construction, fires and rebuilding tells a story over time, while historical objects raise questions about the area.
