Holiday apartment in Eda – border history and nature

Eda Skans combines impressive border history with a tangible insight into earlier defences. The first permanent fortification at Eda Skans was built in 1676 and had room for 100 soldiers and 11 artillery pieces. As a border fortification, Eda Skans recalls the Swedish-Danish wars of the 17th and 18th centuries and illustrates what earlier defence systems looked like and how they functioned.

Culture

The Morokulien Peace Monument also represents the special history of this border landscape. It was erected in 1914 to mark 100 years of peace between Norway and Sweden, and stands in the middle of the border road between Eda in Sweden and Eidskog in Norway. The area around the Morokulien Peace Monument has been made accessible and developed as a visitor destination.

The present church building in Skillingmark was erected in 1690; it was preceded by a medieval wooden church at Klevane udde. A church was built in 1835, replacing a medieval wooden church. A sandstone baptismal font and an altarpiece from the medieval church are preserved in one of the churches.

The Eda Glass Museum preserves numerous glass objects from Eda Glasbruk, which closed in 1953. The history of the routes also reaches far back: in Eda parish, an early-established transport route connected the two kingdoms and was frequently used during enemy attacks.

Nature

The landscape of Tallmon Nature Reserve comprises sandy heaths, ravines, steep slopes and waterways. The nature reserve has a network of paths and hiking trails, as well as a 2.5-kilometre illuminated running track. Kloften Nature Reserve offers views and a ravine that gave the reserve its name.

Gullrosas berg Nature Reserve preserves a diverse ravine landscape with lush deciduous vegetation, pine heaths on rock, productive spruce forests and various types of wetlands.

In the wider regional surroundings of Eda are several distinctive landscape attractions: Sotebrufossen is a waterfall, Lauvkjølhøgda is a mountain and Tukufossen is a waterfall. Ny, Skillingmarks Kyrka and Järnskogs Kyrka are churches in the wider regional surroundings of Eda. Bjørnstadbråten is a hill in the vicinity of Eda.

Activities

Tisseldalsleden is a 10-kilometre circular trail from Skårsjön to the Norwegian border. With a detour to a waterfall, it passes through hilly terrain, key biotopes and a Natura 2000 area with protected species such as the Nordic cliff tussock and lung lichen.

Finnskogleden is a 240-kilometre hiking trail from Morokulien in the south to Trysil in the north. There are two cross-border routes for canoeing, with different itineraries. The Kölälvens canoe route runs from Vestmarka in Norway via Tannsjön, Skillingmark, Askesjön and Björkelången along the Kölaälven to the lakes Hugn and Ränken. The Jösseälvens canoe route runs from Mitanderfors through Norway and via the Jösseälven and Häljeboda back to Sweden, continuing to Glafsfjorden and Arvika.

Valfjället Ski Centre has 12 ski slopes. Valfjället has two free children's slopes for children and adults, as well as a separate toboggan run. In Noresund, an 18-hole golf course is located by Lake Hugn.

A 37-kilometre cycling route in Eda offers several swimming spots and fishing opportunities along the lakes. It can be completed in one day or with an overnight stay along the way.
