Holiday apartment in Yxlan – archipelago, hiking and culture

The Yxlan section of the Stockholm Archipelago Trail offers a 24-kilometre hike close to the sea and combines varied terrain with summer-house settlements and historic villages. On the island, the landscape includes rocky coastlines, woodland, meadows and quiet bays. Yxlan lies between Furusund on the mainland and the island of Blidö in the northern Stockholm Archipelago. Köpmanholm is the archipelago settlement and main locality at the northern tip of Yxlan.

Nature

Yxlan is predominantly covered by spruce and pine forest. Österviken, a designated bathing area, lies on the eastern side of the northern tip. The area has approximately 60 metres of shoreline, a sandy beach and a lawn facing east. Benches with tables, a fire pit and a car park are also available at Österviken.

The islands of Långu, Fårgångsö, Aspö and Löpar-Asken are located near Yxlan. Siarö Fort is a fortress in the vicinity of Yxlan.

Hiking

The Yxlan Trail reaches a lighthouse at the southernmost point of the island’s west coast. Along the way, the Stockholm Archipelago Trail passes Lake Träsket, which is one of the named points of interest. Stortallen is an old pine tree and a separate point of interest on the Yxlan Trail.

The Yxlan Trail is not marked on site. You should therefore use the local printed tourist map or the interactive map for the hike. Anyone hiking to the lighthouse on Yxlan must follow the route on the printed or interactive map for both the outward and return journeys; it is not possible to walk through the residential area. The hike on Yxlan is best started at the ferry terminal in Köpmanholm.

Getting there

The Furusundsleden connects Furusund and Yxlan with a free car ferry. The ferry route is 600 metres long, and the crossing takes four minutes. Another connection is provided by the Blidöleden, which also connects Yxlan and Blidö with a free car ferry. Here, the ferry route is 530 metres long, while the crossing also takes four minutes.

Culture

The name Yxlan is derived from the village of Yxlö in the centre of the island. Records mention a local population there as early as the 12th century. Trojeborg, an old stone labyrinth, is located in Köpmanholm on Yxlan. Trojeborg was probably created by fishermen who believed that walking through the labyrinth would bring good luck when fishing.

Konstrundan on Yxlan takes place every year in August. Around fifteen artists open their homes and studios to visitors. Churches in the wider region around Yxlan include Ljusterö kyrka, Rådmansö kyrka and Frötuna kyrka.
