Holiday apartment in Vallentuna – Cultural history and nature

At Vallentuna Kulturhus, art exhibitions featuring professional artists can be seen in Konstkuben. A Latin missal written in 1198 from Vallentuna Church is the oldest surviving Swedish book. Vallentuna Church was built sometime between 1150 and 1250, mainly from grey stone; there are runic inscriptions of various kinds in and on the church.

Culture

Runriket stretches around Lake Vallentuna and comprises nine cultural and historical sites in Täby and Vallentuna. The prehistoric monuments are clearly signposted, while information boards explain their history. Starting at Jarlabankes bro, parts of Runriket can be visited by bicycle, on foot and by public transport.

Contemporary art is on display at Vallentuna Kulturhus. Konstkuben hosts art exhibitions featuring professional artists, organised by the Municipality of Vallentuna and the Vallentuna Art Association. The Pattern Parade is on permanent display there as a work of art. Kultur Vallentuna also organises, produces or rents the exhibitions shown in Utställningsrummet.

The programme of events also offers various forms of cultural encounters. Kulturrummet hosts cultural lunches and jazz concerts; it also features performances by pupils from the School of Culture as well as art exhibitions. Vallentuna Teater offers concerts, current cinema films, theatre performances, Live-on-Bio events, lectures and other activities. At the end of May, Musik vid kvarnen also returns every year to Väsby kvarn with dancing and music.

Nature

In geographical terms, Vallentuna belongs to the central Swedish rift valley landscape. Clay-filled valley depressions alternate with mountain heights covered by moraine. Near the centre of Vallentuna lies the Björkby-Kyrkviken nature reserve, characterised by an open cultural landscape. Among other species, pochards and mallards breed at Kyrkviken. There are numerous benches and several rest areas along the waterfront promenade.

The Veda nature trail at Storsjön offers a different landscape. The trail passes through a varied woodland landscape and is approximately five kilometres long; there is also a shorter loop of about 4.2 kilometres. Boardwalks lead through the swamp forest, where fluctuating water levels create the conditions for rich biological diversity.

Ubbysjön is one of Vallentuna’s particularly bird-rich lakes. Reeds, shrubs and open water form a varied mosaic that benefits the birdlife. A blue-marked, two-kilometre hiking trail leads around the lake.

Getting around

The Angarnssjöängen area also offers several clearly signposted trails and viewpoints. The easily accessible, 6.7-kilometre Sjöängsslingan hiking route is located in this area. At Örsta, the Roslagsleden trail runs through the south-eastern part of Angarnssjöängen. The birdwatching tower and Midsommarberget on its south-eastern side, north of Örsta, are considered the best viewpoints.

Kvarnbadet offers another activity by the water. It has a heated 50-metre pool, a 17.5-metre pool for swimming lessons and children who are less confident swimmers, as well as a paddling pool for the youngest children. Canoes can be rented at Kvarnbadet; a life jacket is included in the rental price.

Transport

Vallentuna has a public transport network with buses and trains. Roslagsbanan runs through Vallentuna and is part of the regional rail network. For further orientation within the immediate selection of destinations, Vallentuna and Brottby are available.
