Discover Nynäshamn: Holiday Apartments Between Coast and Culture

Nynäshamn combines a diverse coastal landscape with the history of a seaside resort and spa town, as well as cultural sites around the harbour and the town. This character is particularly evident in Lövhagen, at the bathing spots, along the surrounding paths and in the preserved traces of the town’s history.

Coast and Landscape

Lövhagen is a peninsula south of Nynäshamn between Gårdsfjärden and Nynäsviken. The area combines forest, meadows, sea, cliffs and sandy beaches. Strandvägen, also known as Ringvägen, runs along the sea to Lövhagen; coniferous forest lies on one side and the open sea on the other. Near Kroksundsudden is Kärleksgrottan, an eight-metre-high rock crevice that widens towards the bottom.

Water and Paths

Several places give the coast different forms. Nickstabadet offers a water slide, diving tower, beach volleyball and a playground. Hamnviksbadet in Nynäshamn has a small sandy beach, a lawn and a bathing jetty. On stage 5:1 of the Sörmlandsleden, the route runs for 9.5 kilometres from Kvarnängens IP in Nynäshamn to Vansta in Ösmo. A road cycling route of approximately 35 kilometres leads from Nynäshamn to Ankarudden on Torö.

Nynäshamns Gästhamn is also associated with various activities: several boat tours and boating activities, as well as guided town tours, start from there. In addition to paths on land, this means that the townscape also offers activities on the water and guided excursions.

History and Culture

Nynäshamn developed into a seaside resort and spa town from 1901 onwards. Trehörningen later became the centre of bathing activities in Nynäshamn; between 1906 and 1913, Badhotellet, Parkhotellet, Strandhotellet and a casino were built there. Trehörningen island also has a partly English-style park with tall deciduous trees and large lawns. The park is privately owned but open to everyone.

The former bathhouse of Nynäshamn is home to Konstpoolen. It offers exhibitions, music events and an open studio where everyone can paint. Changing exhibitions are shown in the art gallery throughout the year. Near Nynäshamn’s fishing harbour, Godsmagasinet combines an exhibition hall with a shop selling art and various types of handicrafts.

Further historical sites can be found at Nynäshamns Järnvägsmuseum, which displays its collection of older railway vehicles in the locomotive shed, and at Luddes stuga, considered Nynäshamn’s oldest residential building. Nynäshamns kyrka is a popular destination for summer visitors. Nynäshamns hembygdsförening and Nynäshamns Folkdansgille organise annual public Midsummer celebrations on Midsummer Eve, a local heritage day in September and a traditional Christmas market during Advent.

Harbour and Local Tradition

Part of the harbour scene is Kökeriet, a fish-smoking business with a shop and food service at Havstrappan in Nynäshamns Gästhamn. The harbour office of Nynäshamns Gästhamn provides tourist information, brochures and maps. This brings together culinary, maritime and practical points of interest in the harbour without losing sight of the town’s history.

Getting There

Nynäshamn can be reached from Stockholm by both bus and train. The connection with the capital therefore forms another part of the townscape alongside the coastal sites, museums, bathing spots and paths.
