Holiday apartment in Boo: Nature, hiking trails and culture

The Booleden hiking trail is approximately 15 km long and runs from Boo local heritage centre in Orminge to Strömmen farm on the border with Värmdö, where the Värmdöleden begins. Along the trail are lakes, viewpoints, prehistoric monuments and sites of cultural and historical interest.

Nature

The Booleden passes through forests and over rocky terrain, past small forest lakes and across meadows. A prominent viewpoint is Himlaberg: the hill is 70.4 metres high and offers views over forests and the sea from Vaxholm to Tyresö.

Rensättra nature reserve can be reached on foot from the bus stops at Boo Church and Myrsjöskolan. An Iron Age burial ground indicates that Rensättra was already inhabited in the 9th century. The natural area includes old pine forests on rocky terrain. The trees are over 150 years old and some reach 250 years. Swimming is possible on the shore of Lake Sågsjön in Rensättra nature reserve; in the western part there is also a small climbing crag with belay anchors fixed into the rock.

Trails

Lila slingan is 2.7 km long and passes through varied landscapes with meadows, horse paddocks, bodies of water, allotment gardens, spruce forest and rocky terrain. In eastern Boo lies Velamsund nature reserve, which borders Värmdö Municipality. Velamsund farm is situated in a steep rift valley between Lake Insjön and Velamsund Bay.

Snigelstigen runs through Velamsund, an approximately 2 km walking trail with a quiz about the area's nature and culture. Velamsund nature reserve has easily accessible gravel paths suitable for walking or wheelchair use, but they are not laid out as circular trails. These include a lit 2.5 km running track, the green 4-km track and the red 6-km loop.

At the lower end of Lake Rudsjön in Velamsund, the birdwatching tower and the accessible viewing platform offer good views across the entire wetland and alder swamp forest.

Culture

Baggensstäket cultural reserve has been established; boundary markers and information boards are still to be installed. It is intended to preserve and further develop old pine forests on rocky terrain, coniferous forests rich in broadleaf trees, broadleaf woodland groves and shore zones. The cultural reserve is also intended to preserve, further develop and make accessible valuable cultural landscapes and biological diversity.

A cultural and historical walking tour in Boo covers the Russian devastation, Boo farm, the return of the plague and the Battle of Stäket. The cultural walk around Boo farm and Baggensstäket passes interesting buildings, parkland, Iron Age burial grounds and remains relating to the history of defence, and is 4.5 km long. For this cultural walk, it is currently recommended to avoid the shoreline section at Gammeludden and instead follow the signs to Lugna promenaden.

Baptisms, weddings, services and funerals take place at Boo Church. People also meet there for pilgrimages, confirmation and devotions, or for quiet conversations at the graves of their relatives. The interior of Boo Church is inspired by Italian Early Christian architecture and Romanesque basilicas. Its furnishings include a series of stained-glass windows depicting the Passion story, as well as wall and vault paintings by Olle Hjortzberg.

Boo Chapel is located above the outlet from Stäket into Baggensfjärden and belongs to Boo Manor. The old Boo Chapel from the 18th century can be rented during the summer season for baptisms or weddings and has room for 75 visitors. Several musical evenings are held at Boo Chapel during the summer. The Baggensstäket waterway is now used mainly by recreational boats and for excursions, having lost its importance as a commercial transport route.

Surroundings

Nacka can be reached from Stockholm by boat, car, bus, bicycle or the Saltsjöbanan; the journey takes approximately 10 to 20 minutes.
