Oxelösund is a coastal town where the city meets the Baltic Sea archipelago. Oxelösund offers nature reserves, bathing spots, island routes and museums, as well as maritime history, paths along the water and specific options for active days.

Nature and trails

Femöre is a nature reserve suitable for visitors all year round. Most of the Femöre peninsula and the surrounding sea belong to this protected area. On the western and southern sides, it is possible to swim from the rocks near the bathing ladders. Femöre is also crossed by an approximately 6 km circular section of the Sörmlandsleden trail.

The Brannäs Våtmark wetland also combines nature observation with time by the water. It is home to a diverse bird population, a birdwatching tower and a barbecue area; the rocks offer good opportunities for swimming. The Furön route has a shelter with a fire pit directly by the water, as well as a swimming spot and a toilet. Furön can be reached by boat from Gamla Oxelösund.

The blue-marked Kulturstigen trail passes through Gamla Oxelösund; signs provide information about life in the past and the construction of some older houses. A wetland trail at the Frösängs gärde wetland is open to all visitors. It includes a walking path with benches.

Water and activities

Jogersö is home to Sörmland’s largest seaside bathing area with a sandy beach. The bathing area has jetties, a diving tower and an accessibility-adapted ramp. Jogersö also has a 2.5 km illuminated training track. When there is sufficient snow, the track is used as a ski trail in winter.

At Jogersö beach, Oxelösund Adventure Park offers kayak and stand-up paddleboard rentals. The provider also organizes guided kayaking tours through the archipelago, for which no previous experience is required. A kayaking course offered by Oxelösund Adventure Park teaches technique, how to launch the kayak and safety skills. Jogersö is also home to Oxelösunds Äventyrspark, with a high ropes course and zip lines.

Maritime history

The city’s maritime side is visible in several museums and exhibitions. Femörefortet is a Cold War museum in a large underground facility beneath the Femöre nature reserve. Entry to Femörefortet requires a guided tour; the gun emplacements in the outdoor area can be visited freely.

Sjöfartsmuseet provides information about pilotage from the 17th century to the present day, an 80-year shipping company history built on ore transport, and the history of the harbor. The grounds are home to Sweden’s first motorized pilot boat and a small lighthouse. In summer, Skärgårdsmuseet in Gamla Oxelösund presents an annually updated exhibition about the Eriksson fishing family at Grantorpet. The museum also includes a boathouse with old traditional boats.

Lotsarkivet and the open-air exhibition Sjöfart och kustliv offer further insights into life by the sea. Lotsarkivet is a small museum about the pilots who lived and worked in the Oxelösund archipelago. Sjöfart och kustliv is dedicated to people whose lives depended on the sea.

Buildings and urban history

Among the older buildings is Stjärnholms kyrka. It dates from the 1670s and is one of the oldest buildings in Oxelösund. Gamla vattentornet is a listed water tower from the late 19th century and a landmark between Oxelösund city center and the steelworks, north of the road to Gamla Oxelösund.

S:t Botvids kyrka stands nearby as a considerably newer church in the city: the concrete church was built in 1957 to a design by Rolf Bergh. The visible architectural history therefore spans the 1670s, the tower from the late 19th century and the church built in 1957.
