Ystad combines evidence of urban history, film culture and coastal landscapes. The town’s history stretches from theatrical life dating back to the 17th century to a museum in the former Franciscan monastery, while Wallander filming locations, self-guided town walks and paths by the sea reveal very different sides of the town.

Culture and history

The Franciscan monastery in Ystad was founded in 1267. Today, Klostret i Ystad is Ystad’s town history museum; the monastery wing was inaugurated as a museum and library in 1912. Today’s Ystads Teater is also part of this long cultural history: it was inaugurated on 12 February 1894, although theatre has already been performed in Ystad since the 17th century.

Ystad Art Museum displays a selection from its collection in several thematic exhibitions. The museum primarily collects art connected with Skåne. The collection dates back to the late 19th century and mainly includes art from the 20th century to the present day.

Film and town walks

Ystad Studios Visitor Center is a film experience centre in Ystad. On request, it offers guided tours, lectures and workshops. Visitors can record their own film scenes in the greenscreen studio at Ystad Studios. The first 13 Wallander films were shot at Ystad Studios.

At Ystad Visitor Center, visitors receive recommendations for sights and excursions, help with questions about the destination, as well as maps and brochures.

Several routes explore the connection between the townscape, literature and film. A Wallander crime novel town walk leads to Wallander’s favourite places, including a patisserie café and his home, and is based on Henning Mankell’s “The Death of the Photographer”. A digital, self-guided town-walk route leads to medieval buildings and well-known film locations in the town centre. There is also a challenging town-walk route through Ystad’s charming, half-timbered lanes.

Nature and coast

The Ystads sandskog nature reserve lies immediately east of Ystad. Stage 1 of the Skåneleden SL4 Österlen trail runs through Ystads sandskog. The sandy beach there is frequently used for swimming and sunbathing during the summer months and also serves as a popular walking area.

The wetter areas of the site also have a distinctive botanical character. With a little luck, you may spot the rare marsh violet as well as the orchids lesser butterfly-orchid or coralroot orchid there.

Getting around Ystad

For cyclists, Cykelleden Skåne Route 102 passes through Ystad’s picturesque town centre. The Historierundan route follows the coast as far as Svarte. Other routes through the town and surrounding area can also be reached using train, regional bus and town bus services in Ystad Municipality. The 101-km-long Ystad–Österlenbanan railway line runs between Malmö and Simrishamn via Lockarp and Ystad.
