Trelleborg: Holiday Apartments between the Coast and Viking Culture

Trelleborg is regarded as a historic coastal town on the southern coast of Skåne, on the Baltic Sea. The town offers a wide range of opportunities for a stay, from urban history, the Viking Age, art and nature to the sea. Museums and distinctive sites tell stories of bygone eras, while the beach, nature reserve and outdoor trails reveal further facets of the town.

History

The oldest parts of Trelleborg lie around Gamla Torget. The harbour also played a role in the town’s development: it was expanded in the 1860s, and the railway and the shipping connection with Germany later brought further growth to the town. One quarter of the present-day Trelleborgen fortress was built in the heart of the modern town at its original site. Another historic feature is Sandmöllan, the only surviving windmill in Trelleborg. It is a post mill dating from the 17th century.

Culture

Trelleborgen is an open-air museum in the centre of Trelleborg. Under the name “Borgen vid havet”, it presents archaeological finds alongside reconstructed objects from Viking-era Söderslätt. Guided tours and various events are part of the offering, as are activities that convey what life was like for the Vikings.

The Trelleborg Museum features permanent exhibitions on the prehistory of Söderslätt and the industrial history of Trelleborg. These are complemented by temporary exhibitions focusing on art and cultural history. Axel Ebbes Konsthall displays studies and original plaster models by Axel Ebbe; the art gallery also presents designs for public sculptures and monuments. In the urban area, the Konstvandra city art walk leads to statues and works of art in Trelleborg’s streets and squares.

Nature and Coast

In the area around Trelleborg lies Maglarps sandtag, a municipal nature reserve. Many solitary bees can be found there, while sand martins nest in the sand wall. The nature reserve also has a marked path leading to a viewing point for sand martins.

Dalabadet, a seaside bathing facility with a sandy shore and large lawns, lies on the outskirts of Trelleborg. In the area around Trelleborg, east of the harbour at Skåre, there is also an underwater nature trail for snorkelling. Albäcksskogen has a lit, 5-kilometre training track and several pleasant paths.

Leisure and Events

The Battle of Trelleborgen is a Viking event featuring a market, demonstrations, music, crafts and Viking games. Palmfestivalen has taken place on the last weekend of August since 1976. In summer, Palmtåget runs daily between Trelleborg’s attractions. The free hop-on hop-off train combines these journeys with a special feature of the seasonal range of things to do in the town.

Smaller stops and attractions add to the variety. Trelleborgs badhus has a café where visitors can buy fika. The swimming centre also has a warm-water pool with an adjustable depth of up to 1.5 metres. In the area around Trelleborg, Hallongården offers a farm shop with raspberry products, a café serving berry specialities and, in summer, the opportunity to pick your own fruit.

Getting Around

Trelleborg can be reached by car, public transport or ferry. Trains run from Trelleborg to Malmö, Lund and Helsingborg; for much of the day, trains operate every 30 minutes. For cyclists, the main route of the national Sydkustleden cycle trail passes through Trelleborg. The Sverigeleden cycle trail begins on Kontinentgatan opposite Trelleborg Central Station.
