Holiday apartment in Malmö: Culture, Coast and Urban History
Malmö combines a distinctive cultural and architectural history with parks, beaches, gastronomy and a compact city centre. Via the Øresund Bridge, Malmö is connected to Copenhagen and the rest of Europe. The compact city centre can be explored on foot, by bicycle or by public transport.
Culture and History
Malmö Museum is the largest museum in southern Sweden. Its exhibitions cover, among other things, history, nature, technology and maritime activities. The museum also includes an aquarium where visitors can see fish, reptiles, spiders and other cold-blooded animals at close range.
Malmöhus Castle is the oldest surviving Renaissance castle in Northern Europe. Danish kings stayed at the castle during their visits to Malmö. Malmöhus Castle can only be accessed via stairs. The S:t Petri Church is also closely connected with the city’s history: it is Malmö’s oldest surviving brick building and, at the same time, the city’s oldest surviving church. It is open daily from 10:00 to 18:00; admission is free for individual visitors and school classes.
Malmö Konsthall is one of the largest venues for contemporary art in Sweden and offers free admission to all exhibitions and programmes. At Malmö Opera, a guided tour explores the history and architecture of the opera house. It takes visitors behind the scenes of Storan and Verkstan, through the assembly hall, the boxes and the canteen. The theatre of Malmö Opera was inaugurated on 23 September 1944 and is considered a masterpiece of functionalist architecture.
The central squares also tell stories of different eras. Lilla Torg was created as early as the 1590s and has since been used mainly as a market square for local small-scale trade. Stortorget is the first port of call for many visitors to Malmö. Several noteworthy buildings line the square, including Malmö City Hall, Residenset, Jörgen Kocks hus, Hotel Kramer and Apoteket Lejonet.
Parks and Coast
Kungsparken is Malmö’s oldest park. It features many different exotic trees and was originally intended to resemble a botanical garden. Pildammsparken owes its special status to its history and its strongly neoclassical design; together, these make it a unique park in Northern Europe. The park has two themed playgrounds: Spindellekplatsen and Teaterlekplatsen.
Ribersborg Beach, usually called Ribban, is Malmö’s most visited beach and stretches for more than 1.5 kilometres. Ribersborgs kallbadhus also makes swimming and sauna bathing possible during the colder parts of the year. Malmö Folkets Park offers a wide range of activities throughout the year and is closely linked to the period when the labour movement emerged.
Festivals and Culinary Delights
Malmöfestivalen began in 1985. It is an annual city festival featuring music, culture, children’s activities and food, and has been free since its inception. Numerous Malmö-based and international food businesses, restaurateurs and food trucks provide special culinary experiences.
Another destination for culinary concepts is Malmö Saluhall. The covered market hall and food court combine distinctive culinary concepts with dedicated chefs and carefully selected ingredients.
