Norsholm on the Göta Canal: Nature, History and Cycle Paths
Accommodation in Norsholm
Norsholm combines an impressive waterscape with nature experiences, historic buildings and varied opportunities for active days on holiday. The Norsholm nature reserve comprises two extensive wet meadows and gives the area a distinctive landscape character. At the same time, the Göta Canal, its lock and the paths along the water shape the travel experience. If you are looking for a holiday apartment or holiday home in Norsholm, you can therefore choose between observing nature, exploring cultural history, cycling and relaxing hours by the canal.
Wet Meadows and Ruins in the Nature Reserve
The hiking trail in the Norsholm nature reserve offers an appealing combination of landscape and history. A detour leads to the ruins of Munkeboda, which are located on Slottsholmarna and are considered the remains of a bishop's residence from the 14th century. For your day plan, this means that you can combine a hike with a historical destination without losing sight of the natural setting. The ruins are a special stop for anyone who wants to discover something about the area's past along the way, rather than simply covering distance.
Lock, Manor Houses and Canal History
The Norsholm lock bears the baptismal name “Biskop Brask”. At normal water levels in Lake Roxen, it overcomes a difference in elevation of 0.8 metres and is designed as a simple single-chamber lock. These specific features make it an interesting destination for visitors interested in canals, shipping and technical structures.
The history of the manor houses is also part of the local character. The new manor house was built in 1865–1866 for Eva Elisabeth Adelswärd according to plans by the architect Axel Kumlien. Today, only the high basement level of the never-completed castle remains of the old manor house. The two stories offer different ways of accessing the past: one through a completed manor house, the other through the visible remains of an unfinished building project.
Cycling along the Göta Canal
Norsholm is a suitable starting point for the eastern part of the Göta Canal cycle route. In the area around the town, the cycle route follows the section between Berg and Asplången along the gravelled canal bank. At Hulta, cyclists can take a bicycle ferry across Lake Asplången. This allows you to plan your trip according to different interests: you can choose a cycling tour along the canal or include the town as part of a longer route.
For a break, the picnic area with a barbecue site near Norsholm, along the towpath of the Göta Canal, is a good option. Benches, tables and a barbecue site are available there. Norsholm's guest harbour also has 20 berths and ten 6-A sockets, adding a clear connection to the boating world to your time by the water.
Fika and Shared Holiday Moments
Norsholms slusscafé is located in the centre of Norsholm, directly beside the Göta Canal. It offers homemade fika, open sandwiches and meals. The child-friendly garden, with plenty of space for playing, gives families another opportunity to make their time by the canal varied. During the warmer months, Kapten Bille’s offers seating on the veranda with views of the Göta Canal and boat traffic. Kapten Bille’s accommodation has 44 beds in 12 rooms, as well as a bright guest kitchen upstairs. Kapten Bille’s is an STF hostel, restaurant and café in an old harbour warehouse on the Göta Canal in Norsholm.
