Discover Boxholm: Industrial History, Trails and Nature
Accommodation in Boxholm
Boxholm combines industrial history with diverse trails and landscapes. Among forest paths, cultural landscapes and distinctive places in the municipality, you will find various starting points for a trip. If you are looking for a holiday apartment or holiday home as a base, you can tailor your stay to your own interests: culture, exercise, swimming, nature or a quiet day with a visit to the cinema can all be combined.
Industrial history in the oldest building
The Boxholm Industrial Museum is located in Boxholm’s oldest building, a former mill building dating from 1777. The museum presents local industrial history through numerous objects from the period of operation, films and guided tours. This allows visitors to learn about the history of the place not only through dates, but also through tangible insights into its former industrial operations.
Another distinctive testament to the region’s history is the church in Boxholm. It was built from slag stone from the ironworks and consecrated in 1897. For travellers interested in culture, this provides two different perspectives on Boxholm: the museum with its objects, films and guided tours, and a church whose building material is directly connected to the ironworks.
Trails through forest and cultural landscapes
The Boxholm–Blåvik section runs along forest paths, gravel forest roads and short paved stretches. One kilometre south of the town centre, it passes Timmeröbadet. The approximately 300-metre detour to Boxholm ski stadium adds a rest area and barbecue site to this route option. If you would like to start your hike at the railway station, hikes on the Östgötaleden can begin there. From Timmeröbadet, you can follow the Östgötaleden along Gamla Timmerövägen and Anderstorpsvägen to the bridge over the Lillån.
The Boxholm–Trehörna section offers a different trail profile. It is hilly and connects forest and cultural landscapes. On this section, you reach Göstrings urskog. Comparing the different trail sections helps with planning your day: the route to Blåvik features different trail surfaces, while the section to Trehörna is more strongly characterised by hilly landscapes.
Active and relaxing days on holiday
For trip planning that accommodates different interests, Boxholm indoor swimming pool has a 25-metre pool with several lanes. There is also a sauna and a relaxation area. This means that a stay in the town can also include a swim, a swimming session or a subsequent period of relaxation, without spending the entire day on a hiking trail.
On the outskirts of Boxholm lies Flemminge Golf Course on the Svartån. Folkets Hus offers another option for a varied programme with digital 3D cinema. The town also has food, drinks, shops and accommodation. This existing infrastructure can be taken into account when choosing accommodation, especially if you would like to combine excursions with days spent independently.
Natural monuments and special destinations in the surrounding area
Outside Boxholm, Lagnebrunnaeken is protected as a natural monument. In the immediate vicinity of the destination, along the Boxholm–Strålsnäs section, there is a shelter with a fireplace in the forest near Strömmen. These individual natural attractions and resting places complement the longer trails around Boxholm.
